Tell us what you are trying to do?
We wanted to add translated content manually for the custom post type contents which does have ACF custom fields. But in the front end the featured image or the media does not appear unless we have enabled the checkbox manually. But if we do that at the very beginning then the media files are not appearing. For your information, we are using ELementor Pro dynamic templates with custom fields for the custom post type posts like Projects, Job Offerings, Awards etc.

In addition to this, our categories and archives translation is giving us some trouble as well.

Is there any documentation that you are following?
We are always using the standard documentation of WPML.

Is there a similar example that we can see?

What is the link to your site?

Hi there

Sorry for the delayed response, we have a spike in support load and are getting through issues as quickly as possible.

First, from the debug info you provided it appears that

1. your WPML version is not up-to-date, and
2. you are using ACF but not ACFML

After taking a backup, could you please update to the latest version of WPML (4.6.5), and also add ACFML to your site to manage translation or copying of custom fields. (See this page for more info about ACF and WPML: https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/translate-sites-built-with-acf/.)

If you still have a problem can I get more details from you? It isn't entirely clear from your question what the problem is, some screenshots might help clarify.

Thanks

Hello,

Thank you for your follow up response. We have already used that ACFML and updated the WPML to latest version as well. Currently, we have noticed that this category archive template is working nice in ENG.

hidden link

But whenever we are going to visit the same in NL lanugage, hidden link it does not load that specific category archive design in front end with data just like the ENG. Even though we have translated the category from the Taxonomies translation section at first.

In another note, we have noticed that the Translation editor is not loading anymore for projects. So then we have tried to use copy all content from EN, but that does not even copy all the content in NL. You can see that in the below URL -
hidden link

And here is the ENG link - hidden link

Please do not delete or remove any content while you are going to check the issue.

Look forward to hear from you.

Thanks,

I think it would help if I could access the back end of your site to understand what is happening here.

Let me mark your next reply as private so that I can get log-in credentials from you—you may want to create a temporary admin user for us to use that you can later delete. And be sure to have a current backup of your site. (It would be better if you had a staging site I could access.)

I've taken a preliminary look at your site, but I'd feel more comfortable if I could work with a copy of it, as I'm worried I might accidentally break something on your live site.

Is it okay if I take a copy of the site to install locally for testing?

Hello Nigel,

Thank you for your wise decision and procedure to debug the issues/conflicts. We really appreciate that a lot as it will help us to keep the site live and uninterrupted. So you have our approval to download the site and install it on your local computer to look at the issues in detail.

Also please let us know if you have any other queries.

Thanks,

Sorry for the delayed reply, the site is pretty large and it has taken a few goes for me to successfully install it locally. I've managed to do that now, and so I can't start to check the problem.

Hello Nigel,
Thanks for your reply. It's completely fine to take time as it's a larger website. So we hope that you would be able to look at the issue and keep us posted accordingly.
Thanks,

I just noticed on the local copy of the site—and confirmed on your production site—that you don't have the WPML String Translation plugin installed.

That is required for correctly translating content made with Elementor: https://wpml.org/documentation/plugins-compatibility/elementor/

(On my local copy WPML where I added a new admin user it showed a warning banner that this was needed; I guess on your production site this banner had been dismissed.)

I think the problems you are experiencing are likely explained by having translated Elementor templates without String Translation being installed and active, meaning that hidden fields required for Elementor to work correctly are missing on the translated versions.

I suggest you review the above documentation, install and activate WPML String Translation, and re-translate the relevant Elementor content.

Can you then report back to me if you still have any problems? If so, I can look into this further.

Hi Nigel,
That's an amazing discovery from your end as we didn't focus on the system files translation. Because we were thinking of actual contents but then caught up with the unexpected issues in ELementor templates. We have already started to review the string translator and the documentation again to rectify some of those processes.

Just wondering if we need to re-translate the existing templates or we should do that for the new ones only.

Also do we need to follow the same process for the Elementor Global widget translation in different language?

So you know that we have already started to work with the String translation addon and will review the overall status of the translation stability in the site. And then we will revert back to you if the problem still persists for us. Have a good day!

You would need to re-translate the problem templates, although you shouldn't have to translate any visible texts for which you already have translations, it is the missing hidden fields you don't see when translating that are at issue.

And that should apply to the Elementor global widgets, too.

Try updating the translations, and let me know how that goes.

Hello Nigel,
We have successfully fixed several issues with the translation in multi language. And in fact most of the conflicts and issues has been resolved except the home page seems to have some issue still. So two things happened with the home page,
1. When we un link the global widget from the elementor template of home page, all the translations in NL language gone.

2. We have also noticed that the featured slider that is based on a short code is not appearing hidden link in the NL page hidden link
But you can still see the slider working well in EN page hidden link

3. So when we have noticed the above issues, we have deleted the translation of NL language and duplicated the home page again in NL. But surprisingly noticed then the translated URL wasn't found in the frontend and generating 404 error. Then we have restored the old translated URL from the trash and now it's working but still without the slider in home page.

Now if you can help us fix the slider appearance issue in the current translated NL home page or suggest if we should recreate the home page in NL again. But then how can we fix the 404 issue even though the new translation would be created.

On the other hand, it would be appreciable if you can make the reply private or hide the links from public view.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Kind Regards,

I'm glad to hear you have made progress.

Regarding the outstanding issues. I expect the 404 issue was because it sounds like the original page was in the trash, you didn't actually delete it.

I'm not sure of the current state of the site.

You said the slider is missing, but when I visit the page hidden link I can see the sliding working correctly (the same as on the English page).

By the way, those links are automatically hidden from other users. Try visiting this page in an private browser tab and you'll see what others see. If there are some links that you expect to be hidden that are visible let me know and I will check.

And I'm not sure what you are referring to here: "when we un link the global widget from the elementor template of home page".

The home page is a page made with Elementor, yes? (Or is there an Elementor theme template which is assigned to display on the home page?)

I expect that if you send the page (or template) to translation and update the translation, then the Dutch version of the home page should show the translated texts as intended.

Hello Nigel,
Thank you for your excellent follow up and clarification. And we can see the sliders in translation as well. So may be it was a temporary server loading issue or caching.

We have made some more progresses and very close to the finish of our translation. But still we have noticed a issue that few of the projects type post does not have featured image appearing in the NL language even though we have copied and duplicated the items from other language in translation editor. Please have a look at the below examples and let us know if you can figure out the issue.

We really appreciate your great support to help us resolve many issues with the translation so far.

Waiting to hear from you.
