Background of the issue:
Our site is developed in English with translations available in Ukrainian and Russian. When we view a course created in one of these languages and switch to another language, it should load the homepage, not translate the page.

Symptoms:
Currently, when we view a course created in Russian or Ukrainian and switch to English, it does not load the homepage but translates the course view page instead.

Questions:
How can I configure WPML to load the homepage when switching languages instead of translating the current page?

Hi there.

I converted our live chat to a session as you requested.

Also, these were my latest replies in our live chat session, maybe you did not get the chance to see them:

Mihai Apetrei : So, if there is an existing translation for a page, when you switch the language from the front-end by clicking on one of the flags, WPML will try to take you to the translation of that page

Mihai Apetrei : If you go to WPML > Settings > Post Types Translation > you have three options there for each post type (3 radio buttons that you can select from)

We create the course only in one language (for example, Ukrainian), so the page of this course should not be translated into other languages. But for some reason, it is being translated into English, but not into Russian.

If we create a course in Russian, the page with this course is also translated into English, but not into Ukrainian.

If we create a course in English, it is not translated into other languages, and when switching to another language, the main page is loaded, as it should be. Because the course is created specifically only in one language, and there is no translation for the created course.

Hi there.

The normal WPML behavior should be that it shouldn't show up any other flags in the language switcher that don't have an existing translation.

If any extra flags show up in the language switcher, that means that there is existing content in those languages.

1. Can you give me an example of a course that I can find in the backend of the site where this issue is happening, and then, can you please guide me on how I can get to that specific course?

2. I would like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site to take a better look at the issue. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

Our Debugging Procedures

I will be checking various settings in the backend to see if the issue can be resolved. Although I won't be making changes that affect the live site, it is still good practice to backup the site before providing us access. In the event that we do need to debug the site further, I will duplicate the site and work in a separate, local development environment to avoid affecting the live site.

Privacy and Security Policy

We have strict policies regarding privacy and access to your information. Please see:
https://wpml.org/purchase/support-policy/privacy-and-security-when-providing-debug-information-for-support/

**IMPORTANT**

- Please make a backup of the site files and database before providing us access.

- If you do not see the wp-admin/FTP fields this means your post & website login details will be made PUBLIC. DO NOT post your website details unless you see the required wp-admin/FTP fields. If you do not, please ask me to enable the private box.

The private box looks like this: hidden link

I will be waiting for your response.

Hi, and thank you for the credentials.

I can confirm that I was able to log in successfully.

I am spending more time on this and will get back to you as soon as I have more feedback.

I will leave the ticket assigned to myself for now.

PS: This is just a note that I won't work over the weekend. I will get back to work on Monday. (I'm mentioning this in case a reply comes this weekend.)

Kind regards,
Mihai

Hi there.

I'm not sure what is happening but the login doesn't work anymore.

I am not able to get into the backend of the website, I am always automatically logged out and then redirected here:

Hi there.

The credentials were working ok, I was logged into the site but when I tried to access the backend (hidden link), I was automatically logged out and sent to the main homepage: hidden link

Now I can confirm that I was able to log in again into the backend.

I am back. Thank you so much for your AMAZING patience.

This situation is super strange.

I can't seem to understand from where and how is this loading (hidden link) when actually we have only a Ukrainian version for this course (hidden link) - there are NO translations whatsoever for any other language so I'm not sure what is loaded there - either some cache or I don't know.

To further debug the problem I’d like to replicate your site locally.

I will need your written approval to be able to duplicate your site using a plugin called "Duplicator" and test your site on a testing environment so can you please let me know if this is ok with you?

After we find a solution for this, the duplicated site will be deleted.

I might need to even further escalate this to our developers if I don't have any results.

Also, please create a full website backup before answering.

I will be waiting for your response.

Hi there,

Thank you so much for your incredible patience. Your cooperation has allowed my colleagues and me to delve deeper into this issue.

I encountered multiple challenges while duplicating your site due to its setup, current server resources, and large website file size (the database alone is between 500 and 600 MB). These factors prevented me from running a full website backup for local duplication. Additionally, I found some unusual files related to GIT, likely because you're using it to push content updates. The server consistently ran out of memory due to the site's size and the many active plugins.

Our developers suspect this might be a compatibility issue, particularly given the numerous active plugins on the site. They have requested that you try to reproduce this issue in a clean testing environment.

To assist you, I have set up a WordPress testing environment with the same languages as your current site. All I need from you is to install the minimum plugins required to reproduce the issue, likely the "Courses" plugin and the theme you are using.

We are not seeking a full duplication of your website. We only need the bare minimum functionality to see if the issue occurs in our testing environment.

Here are some additional steps you can try on a staging/testing site (I'm not sure if the current one we accessed is a staging/test site, despite having "dev" in its name):

1. Create a full website backup.

2. Disable all plugins except WPML and its add-ons, and keep the plugin that enables the "Courses" post type active.

3. Check if the issue occurs again.

4. If the issue does not occur, reactivate your plugins one by one, checking each time if the issue reappears to identify the problematic plugin.

If the issue persists with the non-WPML plugins disabled:
1. Leave all non-WPML plugins deactivated.

2. Switch to a default theme like TwentySeventeen.

3. Try to recreate the issue again.

It would be best to perform these steps in a staging (testing) environment if possible.

Please let me know how things progress and inform me when you have reproduced the issue on the staging site so I can update our developers.

Here is the one-click login for the testing environment I created for you:

Once again, I genuinely appreciate your patience and cooperation throughout this debugging process.

I look forward to your response.
