This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client needed to change an existing WPML license on a running website due to new ownership and was concerned about losing translations if the WPML Plugin was uninstalled.
Solution:
We assured the client that translations are stored in the database, so they would not be lost when updating plugins or changing the WPML key. We recommended the following steps:
1. Create a full backup of the website.
2. Generate a new key for the domain from the WPML account, which can be accessed here: https://wpml.org/account/sites
3. Copy the new key.
4. Navigate to the website's backend.
5. Go to Plugins > Add New > Commercial.
6. Unregister WPML from the old key and re-register it with the new key.

If this solution does not apply to your case, or if it seems outdated, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Background of the issue:
We wanted to change an existing license on a running website (new ownership).

Symptoms:
If we uninstall the WPML Plugin, all translations will be lost.

Questions:
Could you help us change the existing license on a running website?
Is there another way to change the license without affecting the current installation?

Hi there.

The translations are saved into the database so you should not lose them when you would update the plugins or when you change the WPML key.

Please create a full website backup, then generate a new key for your domain from under your WPML.org account here (https://wpml.org/account/sites) > then copy the key and go to your website's backend > Plugins > Add new > Commercial > UNregister WPML from the old key > RE-register WPML with the new key.

I hope that you will find this information helpful.
