Background of the issue:
I was trying to ensure that hreflang tags are correctly implemented on my website after the latest WPML update. I noticed that these tags were removed from the <head> section and are supposed to be included in the sitemap according to the update notes. I re-enabled the hreflang tags in the <head> section via WPML → Languages → SEO Options.

Symptoms:
Hreflang tags were removed from the <head> section of my website after the WPML update, and I could not find them in the RankMath generated sitemap.

Questions:
Is the removal of hreflang tags from the <head> section expected behavior after the WPML update?
How can I ensure hreflang tags are correctly implemented in the sitemap?
