This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are having trouble translating a section with nested tags, and attempts to redo the translation after deleting the original have led to site crashes and errors.
Solution:
First, ensure that your original content's nested tags are correctly formatted. Check that each tag is properly opened and closed in the right order. For example, the correct format should look like

<strong><em>...</em></strong>

, and not

<strong><em>...</em></strong>

.
Once you've confirmed the tags are set up correctly, proceed with these steps:
1. Open the translation editor.
2. Delete the existing translation for the problematic segment.
3. Use the option to copy the original content into the translation editor to ensure all tags are correctly copied.
4. Translate the text within the tags without altering or removing the tags themselves.

I have tried several times to get a section of tags with nested tags to translate without success. I have tried inputting the nested tags in different ways none of which work. I even deleted the English page and tried to re-do the translation (this caused the site to crash and create a WordPress report, pinpointing WPML; fortunately only temporarily). It also would not re-load the english page for a new translation (after deleting the old french one) without an error (see second screengrab, but eventually did so after retrying. I did leave 15 minutes before each of the above mentioned actions in case it was server lag.

What are my options. I am attaching 2 screengrabs of the respective notifications.

Hello,

Welcome to the WPML support forum.

It seems that you have a lot of nested tags (at least 3 levels). Let try 2 things:
1. Edit your original content and review if the nested tags are opened and closed in the proper order and resave the page.
Correct:

<strong><em>...</em></strong>

Incorrect:

<strong><em>...</strong></em>

2. Once you're sure that the original content is correctly set, then open the translation
- Delete the translation for that specific segment
- Click on the icon to copy the original content in the translation (see capture) - that way you are sure that all tags have been copied
- Then translate the text inside those tags without touching or removing the tags

I ended up having to completely create a new page as I couldn't get out of the translation & I couldn't delete it as once I had retracted the automatic translation (which I had to do to save it), it no longer existed on the French side. So, in summary I found an (albeit time consuming) alternative. Many thanks
