This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client reported an issue where typing the name of an item in the upload directory resulted in a direct redirection to the media file. This behavior was linked to the WPML plugin, as deactivating WPML stopped the redirections.

Solution:
1. We asked the client to provide more details on the tests conducted to ascertain that WPML was the cause of the issue.
2. We requested the client to create a full website backup and then disable WPML and its add-ons to verify if the issue persisted.
3. We acknowledged that this is a known issue and directed the client to a forum thread discussing it: https://wpml.org/forums/topic/url-redirecting-to-attached-media/.
4. We suggested that changing the permalink or file name could serve as a temporary solution.
5. We informed the client that we do not have a specific timeframe for when a permanent fix will be implemented, as our development team is prioritizing tasks based on various factors.

Please note that the solution provided might be outdated or not applicable to your case. If the issue persists, we highly recommend checking the related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If you still need assistance, please do not hesitate to open a new support ticket in the WPML support forum.

We have an issue with redirection. Typing the name of something in the upload directory redirects directly to the asset. We have identified that this is happening because of the WPML plugin.

For example, if you type 'devoe25maint.wpengine.com/devo-drive-program', it redirects to 'hidden link'."

Here are the instance details.
URL devoe25maint.wpengine.com
UN devoe25maint
PW 09808712

Hi there.

You said:

Can you please elaborate a bit more on what did you test exactly and what did you find, how do you know it is caused by WPML?

Also, can you please create a full website backup and then try to disable WPML (and the WPML add-ons) and see if the issue is still happening?

I am not 100% sure that this issue is related to WPML so that is why I would like us to verify that.

Please let us know how things go.

Hi Mihai,

We started debugging the issue by deactivating the plugins one by one. When we deactivated the WPML plugin, these unusual redirections stopped.

Hi there.

I was able to find out that this is a known issue to our dev team and they are working on fixing it but that will take some time as there are multiple other things on the list with different levels of priority (we, supporters, have no control for setting the priority):

For now, changing the permalink or file name will solve it.

Please try and let me know if that resolved the issue for you.

I will be waiting for your response.

I don't think changing the permalink or file name is a solution because we would have to rename all the file names. Also, if we change the name of a file, it can still be redirected to the new name, right?

Could you provide a ballpark timeframe that I can share with my team?

Hi there.

Unfortunately, I don't have a timeframe that I can share.

Our dev team is working hard on updates and fixes related to the new WordPress version and I really have no idea when this will be launched into the next version.

I would love to be able to have this information so that I can also share it with you but I don't have it.

In regards to this: Also, if we change the name of a file, it can still be redirected to the new name, right?

Yes, it should still redirect.
