This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are trying to delete all content for a particular language using the instructions from https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-completely-remove-a-language-from-your-site/, but the process is slow and the number of assets decreases only slightly.
Solution:
If the number of assets is decreasing, even slowly, it indicates that the process is working. The speed of deletion depends not on WPML but on your hosting/server resources. We recommend disabling all other plugins temporarily to see if this speeds up the process. Additionally, consider contacting your hosting provider to discuss upgrading to a more robust hosting package. Please be aware of a known issue where taxonomies are not deleted when using the 'Delete content from database' option, detailed here: https://wpml.org/errata/taxonomies-are-not-deleted-with-the-delete-content-from-database-option/.

Background of the issue:
Delete all content for a particular language. I am following these instructions: https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-completely-remove-a-language-from-your-site/

It is taking forever to delete and doesn't feel like anything is getting removed because the prompt refreshes and the number of assets does not go down.

Hello,

it could be something is blocking WPML process, please make a backup and:

- switch to default WP theme
- disable all other plugins and leave active only WPML plugins

try again and check after 5-10 minutes if the numbers have gone down.

I tried this today and it didn't make any difference. The number of assets does go down but only slightly (2-3 at a time). Which when you see how much "Media" there is for each language is untenable.

Hello,

if it goes down, then it means it works, on how it fast goes doesn't not depend on WPML, but your hosting / server and free resources. You can check with all other plugins disabled or check with hosting support and upgrade to stronger packages.

Please note there is bug with taxonomies, and they wont be deleted: https://wpml.org/errata/taxonomies-are-not-deleted-with-the-delete-content-from-database-option/
