Background of the issue:
I am quite annoyed. It happens very often that I need to re-translate already translated pages. In this moment I have several pages that are perfectly visible in English on my website, but when I open them in the WPML editor, a lot of strings are missing and to be translated again. It's not the first time it happens, and I cannot correlate it with any specific action I have made. This time I updated the version of WordPress (6.6), but I am not sure it is related.

Symptoms:
I open a perfectly translated page in WordPress, and in the Advanced Translation Editor a lot of strings must be translated again. It happens very often, on random pages, without me doing anything special / changing anything in the original page.

Questions:
I want to avoid this behaviour, I cannot continue re-translate my already translated pages.

See the screencast: I open the translation editor on a perfectly translated pages, and a lot of strings are missing.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support. While you are waiting for one of my colleagues to take this ticket and work on it, let me provide you with the first debugging steps and try to help with the issue quickly.

Can you please explain how where these translations are being added in the first time? Have you edited and added some content manually by editing 2nd language page? If yes, then this can cause issues, such as translation methods not be mixed.

Let us know.

Regards,
Drazen

Hi Drazen, thanks for your help. No, I am quite carefull in NEVER editing the "2nd language page" in WP. I am only editing the page in the original language (Italian), saving it, and then click on the "gear" icon on the "Pages list", both for the English version and for the French version, to update the translation.

Sometimes, all of a sudden, I see that some of all the "stylo" icons (= translation is complete) are changed into the "refresh" icon (see the 1st attached image). I open the translation page, and a lot of strings are missing. See the attached 1st image: I've changed the original page on April 30 the last time. All of a sudden, I see appearing the "refresh" icon. When I click on them, and I open the translation editor, you can see in the 2nd image that many translations are missing, despite the fact that the "live" English page is perfectly up to date.

THX & bye,
A.-

Hi Angelo,

Please try this and let me know your results.

Open the ATE editor shown in your screenshot and click on the 'gear icon' , switch the ATE editor from using Gen3 to the previous version.

Once done, let me know if that resolves the issue you are experiencing and the translation is back.

Our team is working on an issue that has caused some translation memory issues which seems related to what you are experiencing.

Hi, I was already on the previous version, as you can see in the last screenshot. ANyhow, I switched back to new one, and nothing changes. I switched back again, no changes. My transaltions are gone, despite the fact that I see them very well in the production page.

Dear both,
we are currently facing the same issue. The Strings were translated using automatic translation for the first time. Then we translated several Pages using the Editor. When saved (the original Pages were not updated in this timespan) and reopened some time after the Content went back to the original translation and the translated String were lost.
If i can provide useful Information please let me know so that this issue can be fixed.
Best regards,
Julian

Hi, any news? All this time with no answer makes me think that I should consider my translations inexplicably lost, once again: is that right?

I am honestly thinking of changing tool: I cannot continue spending time translating pages, and when I need to apply some small updates, all of a sudden have to re-translate large parts of my pages, despite the translated sentences are perfectly visible on the production website.

For instance: what's the purpose of the "translation memory", as it's not filled with the translations that are visible on the website?

Hi there,

This issue has been escalated to the appropriate team. Our team is actively working on this issue and I will be updating you as soon as I have feedback that is relevant to your case.

When it comes to having Translate Everything enabled, small changes will create a review that will trigger a retranslation and that is somewhat expected, however, I am discussing this with our team to see if your experience was expected or originating from an issue in the ATE editor.

Hello,

We have the same issue on a website running WordPress 6.7.1 and the latest WPML plugins (WPML Multilingual CMS 4.6.14, WPML String Translation 3.2.15) as the solution above recommends but the translations keeps "randomly" disappearing.

Is there any workaround or a planned fix for this issue ? This is a very annoying bug = /

Hi,

I have the same problem too. It's very annoying because I have to re-transalate everytime translation strings previously translated (less than 5 minutes before).

My environment is:
WPML 4.6.15
String Translation 3.2.18

No cache system activated.

Please give us a solution as soon as possible
