This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client needed clarification on whether changing the domain of a site affects WPML settings and if they should transfer the WPML key from one installation to another or obtain a new one.
Solution:
1. We recommend creating a full website backup before making any changes to the domain.
2. For a new domain, it is necessary to create a new WPML key and remove the old one. Both actions can be performed here.
3. After obtaining the new key, navigate to your site > Plugins > Add new > Commercial, then unregister WPML using the old key and re-register it with the new key.
4. If you revert to the original domain later, you can reuse the previously created key for that domain.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems outdated, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Hi there.

No, changing the domain name won't affect your WPML settings.

1. Please create a full website backup before starting doing that change

2. Please make sure that you create a new WPML key for the new domain and remove the old key for the old domain - both actions can be done from here: https://wpml.org/account/sites

3. After you copy the new key, go to your site > Plugins > Add new > Commercial > UNregister WPML from the old key and REregister WPML with the new key.

I hope that you will find this information helpful.

It is not really a NEW domain. It new INSTALLATION on another server, that during development has a temporary domain.
Once the new site is done, I will point the production domain to the new server. In that case, should I just copy the key from one installation to another, or get a new one?

Hi there and thank you for the explanations.

As long as you are using a different domain (testing domain), you will need a WPML key for that specific domain.

When you turn back to the same domain, you should be able to use the same key that you had already created for that domain.

I hope that this answer is a bit more on point than the last one I shared 🙂
