This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are trying to translate the URLs on your site using WPML, but cannot achieve this.

Solution:
If you're experiencing issues with translating URLs and suspect it might be due to previous configurations left by other plugins like GTranslate, we recommend you try the following steps:
1. Install a file manager plugin.
2. Rename the .htaccess file to a different name.
3. Go to the Permalinks settings in your WordPress dashboard and resave them without making any changes. This action will generate a new .htaccess file with the default and necessary WP/WPML directives.

After completing these steps, please check if the URLs are now correctly translated to your desired language on your site.

This solution might be irrelevant if the problem is caused by different factors or if it's outdated. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the issue persists, please open a new support ticket.

Hi,

Reference to our recent chat, I need to take a closer look at your site. So I request temporary access (WP-Admin and FTP), preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated.

Your next answer will be private, to share this information safely.

Also provide detailed steps to reproduce the issue and links to pages in the admin and on the frontend.

IMPORTANT: Please take a complete backup of the site to avoid data loss. I may need to activate/deactivate plugins also.

See https://wpml.org/purchase/support-policy/privacy-and-security-when-providing-debug-information-for-support/ for details on privacy and security.

P.S.: If you don't see the section for providing access information, do not write in the message box or the information may appear as public.

Regards.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation.

I examined the issue in your staging site in detail. Even after deactivating most of the plugins the issue was still there. However, after further digging I found that perhaps GTranslate was used previously which left its footprints in the .htaccess file (even after it has been deactivated).

So I then tried the following steps:

- Installed a file manager plugin.
- Renamed the .htaccess file to another one.
- Went to Permalinks and resaved without making any change.
- This generated a new .htaccess file with all the necessary and default WP/WPML necessary directives.

And now this seems to work fine. I checked several products randomly for German translations and all seem to have German translated slugs.

Please check in your staging site that if it is now working as you were expecting about the URL translation? If yes, then I'll recommend applying the above mentioned steps in your live site. But of course, take a full backup of live site first.
