Background of the issue:
My customer wants a landing page where the customer can choose 4 different languages: AT, DE, CH, and EN. All of the above (except EN) should have EN as the second language, so AT/EN, DE/EN, and CH/EN. These language combinations should be separate from other languages. If someone clicks on AT and then on EN, they should only see content and translated text from AT. The same applies if they choose DE or CH; they should see a different EN version for all languages. I am using Elementor Pro.

Symptoms:
N/A

Questions:
Is it possible to have different EN versions for AT, DE, and CH using WPML?

Hi There,
Thanks for contacting WPML Support.

I understand your requirement. It's possible to have different EN versions for AT, DE, and CH using WPML. To achieve this, follow these steps:

1. Create Content Separately: Start by creating content independently for AT, DE, and CH languages. To independently create content, switch languages from the WordPress Admin using the language switcher that appears on the top bar of Admin(Screenshot: hidden link). Ensure these contents are not linked as translations but are distinct entries for each language.
2. Translate to English (EN): After creating the contents AT, switch to the AT language in the WordPress admin and translate it into EN. Avoid translating into any other language.
3. Repeat for DE and CH: Switch to the DE language and translate its content into EN. Do the same for CH.
4. Verify Language Switching: Once translated, check the content in each language (AT, DE, CH). When viewing an AT post, the only available language on the switcher should be EN. The same applies to DE and CH posts.

This setup allows each region to have its unique English content, separate from the others.

I hope it helps. Please feel free to let me know if that helps or if you need further clarification. I will be happy to help.

Best regards,
Prosenjit

Hi there an thanks,

I already have an existing Installation with not seperated English. Do i have to start over again? I have the 3 languages and a english version...

Also, I need one stand alone English version so AT/EN DE/EN CH/EN and EN - and a language selector - which should load first before all other content...

thanks again!!

Hi There,
Thank you for the update.

If your site already supports AT, DE, and CH languages, you can simply add the EN language and proceed with the existing installation.

Regarding your requirement for a standalone version, could you please provide more details? If you have an example site that you can share, it would greatly help in clarifying your requirements. Please also specify what the default language for your site will be.

Looking forward to your response and I'm always here to help.

Best regards,
Prosenjit

Hi there, the website is unicope.com

I have as I said a AT/DE/CH and a EN translation - but the en translation is seperate to the others. so if i switch from AT to EN i see the global translation not the one for AT - and so on. How can I change that to have a combined AT/EN and so on translation and a extra English?

Thanks again!!

Hi There,

Thank you for explaining your requirements. I understand that you're aiming to maintain separate English translations for each regional variation (e.g., AT/EN, DE/EN, CH/EN) while also having a global English version (EN). WPML doesn’t natively support multiple translations per language. However, you can achieve this by creating custom languages.

Here's how you can set up custom languages to achieve your goal:

1. Navigate to WPML > Languages in your WordPress dashboard.
2. In the "Edit Languages" section, add a new language with a unique name (e.g., "English - Austria") and code (e.g., `en-at`). Repeat this for DE and CH languages. For detailed guidance on creating custom languages, refer to this guide: https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/language-setup/editing-wpmls-languages-table/.
3. Create content in the AT language and translate it into `en-at`. Do the same for DE and CH.
4. For the global English version, create content as needed.

This approach will allow you to manage separate regional English translations while keeping them distinct from your global English version.

Let me know if you need further assistance or clarification in this matter. I will be happy to help.

Best regards,
Prosenjit
