Background of the issue:
I am using WPML's PTC auto translation to add English and German languages to our client's website, which is originally in Dutch. The process worked for all pages except one: hidden link. I have tried multiple times to auto-translate this page, but it remains stuck.

Symptoms:
The auto translation for one specific page keeps running without result. When attempting to confirm translations in the translation manager, the translation status icon rotates for quite some time and then changes to a gear icon with a notice about 'waiting for the first available partner'. Manual translation attempts also fail, as switching to the WPML translation editor or WordPress editor does nothing (again the rotating icon) and switching to the WordPress editor doesn't seem to anything at all. The page which is not translated is no different technically to other pages on the site that were translated without a problem so I do not see what the problem can be. Nor how to work around this.

Questions:
Why is the auto translation stuck for this specific page?
How can I manually add translations now that the auto translation fails and my other attempt fail too?

Hello,

It seems the minimum requirements on the server are not met:
https://wpml.org/en/home/minimum-requirements/

Could you please increase the WordPress memory limit (WP Memory Limit) to at least 256 MB? WPML requires at least 128 MB.
Your current values are:

PHP Memory Limit 512 MB
WP Memory Limit 40 MB

To do this, you need to connect to your website's server and open the wp-config.php file in a text editor. The file is located in the WordPress root directory.

Add this code to the wp-config.php file to increase WordPress memory:

define ('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');

Add this just before this comment:

// That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging.

The current values can be viewed under WPML > Support > WordPress. These settings can be restricted directly by your hosting provider. Therefore, I recommend contacting them and asking them to change the limit if your adjusment is not applied immediately.

If this did not solve the issue:

It may happen sometimes that translation jobs get stuck.

Could you please try to edit the content of the original page, then save the page and try to apply the translation again?

If this does not solve the issue, please let me know.

Best regards
Andreas

Hi Andreas,

Apologies for my belated answer, I was under the impression I would receive a notification as soon as an answer came in from support but I didn't hear back yet. However when I checked the support thread this morning I noticed you had already answered on Friday!

In any case, I made the change to wp-config.php and confirmed this in the WPML / Support section.

I also made a change to the page in question and applied the automatic translation again. While the other pages, which were also earmarked for a translation update at the same time, were auto translated as they should, these two translations are still stuck.

As mentioned in my reply to your support bot I already tried duplicating the pages and made the textual change to this version.

As also mentioned previously there is nothing on this page that isn't also used on another page that IS translated without a problem.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,
Arno

Small update: As a test I created a totally new page. This time not a duplicate but a new page with the same content. First created a Beaver Builder template of the layout and then applied this to the new page. I tried translating that next: Sadly exactly the same problem...stuck translation.

They seem not to be stuck - it is odd that after I go through all the fields inside the translation editor and save the translation at 100% it will work. Just often with a huge delay.

Although on a new test with a complete, untranslated version of the page, it now worked in seconds.

If this issue arises again, please let me know.

Hi Andreas,

Earlier attempt on the original page, the duplicate and test version of earlier today just stayed in the 'in progress' status indefinitely. While other pages performed as expected while being translated.

I am really surprised that your attempts worked. Both the original version, the duplicate as well as the test version all seem correct now.

Do you have any idea what could be the cause?

Hi Andreas,

If I see correctly you didn't use the PTC auto translate function? That's where the initial (and main) problem is/was.

After the auto translating kept running on every try I tried it through the translation manager. That didn't work for this page but clearly did for you now...

Hi Andreas,

You asked me to let you know when the problem arises again.

That is currently the case: I tried the auto translate for this particular page again and it hangs again (also see my previous comments that the auto translation did not work). Now you can see it for yourself.

I changed the url of the page in question (to get rid of the '2' in the url) and while it works the German version still shows this in the url, so I tried the auto translate to get rid of it.

Please note: This website is now live.

I have sent the page "Weegversterkers uit eigen productie" again to automatic translation, and the translations do work out; it just takes an unexpectedly long time for WPML to update the translation status. At the moment, it only updated German, but not English.

I am not sure why that is, but it might be a communication issue between servers, as WPML sends an XLIFF file to our translation server, which is then translated and sent back to WordPress. For some reason, WordPress is not picking up the file or delaying the progress.

Could you please ask the hosting support if the server's firewall might be rejecting requests from one of our domains?

For example:
wpml.org
cdn.wpml.org
api.wpml.org
ams.wpml.org
api.toolset.com
cloudfront.net

Even though the German translation may seem to have concluded, it did not update the url that we changed on the Dutch version (the 2 should not be shown any more). So it would seem to have done nothing. Agreed?

The English translation still appears to be running, something like 12 hours later. So clearly this is once again stuck...

Please note that all other automatic translations are always finished in a matter of minutes, so the firewall rejecting requests from your domains seems highly unlikely.

It is this particular page that is giving trouble. The original page gave the same problem (this one is the duplicate) and even a totally new page with the same content gave the same problem.

So it seems something in the page content is causing this. But at first glance there does not seem to be anything on the page that could cause this.

Indeed, then this might be content-related. I will try to export the page and test it on a new test site.

So far, I am not able to confirm the issue after importing the page on a sandbox and testing with the Beaver Theme and Beaver Builder, but I have not yet tested with PTC here. Anyhow, on your site, the issue is not PTC-related. I can see the same issue when using the WPML Translation Editor as the translation method.

You can visit the sandbox here:

I will run further tests and will likely try to take a local copy of your site to test the translation on a virtual server.

After taking another visit to your site, the translation was now working within seconds again.

Running another test on your site with a copy of the mentioned page, I can no longer confirm the issue.
