Subject: URGENT – WPML String Translation causes 500 Internal Server Error

Description / Issue:

Hello WPML Support Team,

We are experiencing a critical issue on our website after activating the WPML String Translation plugin. The site now shows 500 Internal Server Error on all language pages and wp-admin, and even after deactivating the plugin, the site remains broken.

We need guidance to safely restore the site and ensure WPML String Translation can be used without crashing the site.

WP Memory Limit: 768M
WPML Core Version: 4.8.6
WPML String Translation Version: 3.4.1
Other WPML Plugins Installed (but currently deactivated due to errors):
WPML SEO 2.2.4
Gravity Forms Multilingual 1.8.3
WPML Sticky Links 1.5.5
WPML CMS Navigation 1.5.6
WPML Media Translation 3.0.0 (not installed)
WooCommerce Multilingual & Multicurrency 5.5.3.1 (not installed)

Steps to reproduce / history:

The site was running normally on PHP 8.2 with WPML Multilingual CMS active.

WPML String Translation was activated. After activation:
All language pages, including Dutch, English, French, and German, started returning 500 Internal Server Error.
WP-admin also became inaccessible.
The plugin was deactivated, but the site still returned 500 errors.

Attempts to rebuild permalinks and clear WPML caches were not possible because wp-admin is inaccessible.

PHP error log shows repeated warnings related to String Translation:

Site’s .htaccess has been reset multiple times by hosting support, but dynamic WPML rewrite rules appear to conflict, causing 500 errors.

WordPress REST API is now enabled (hidden link
loads after core WPML is repaired), but the site still crashes when String Translation is activated.

Current state:
WPML core is active and working without String Translation.
All other WPML add-ons are deactivated.
/en/ and other language pages load only when String Translation is OFF.
Site crashes immediately if String Translation is activated.

Actions already attempted:
Deactivated WPML String Translation plugin (via file rename).
Cleared WPML caches (when possible) and rebuilt tables using WPML troubleshooting → Fix WPML tables collection.
Saved permalinks to refresh rewrite rules.
Confirmed PHP version is 8.2 (WPML compatible).

Hosting support confirmed no firewall, ModSecurity, or server-level blockages affecting REST API.
Request / Next steps:

We need WPML support to advise:
How to safely reactivate WPML String Translation without breaking the site.
How to resolve the “Undefined array key ‘translator_id’” error.
Any additional steps required to repair WPML rewrite rules / language routing.
Guidance on whether updating WPML plugins or PHP adjustments is required.

I completely understand what you're experiencing. The PHP warning you shared shouldn't actually cause an internal server error, PHP warnings are just notices to fix something, they don't interrupt processes in a way that would trigger a 500 error.

Since you're seeing an internal server error, there's likely something else happening. The PHP/Server error log should contain more detailed information about what's actually causing the crash. This log is available through your hosting control panel or from your server administrator.

Could you reach out to your hosting support and request the PHP/Server error logs from the last 24 hours (especially around the time the error occurred)? Once you have those, please share them in your next response. I'll review them and try to identify what's actually triggering the 500 error.

This is often caused by third-party plugins that use the `flush_rewrite_rules(true)` function repeatedly, which can overwrite the .htaccess file. I've seen this happen quite a bit.

You'll find a Solution in that article. Could you please try the solution and see if it helps? This workaround resolves .htaccess overwriting issues in most cases, and I'm hopeful it'll work for your situation too.

Hello,

The website is still suffering, when enabling "WPML String Translation" plugin, following problem comes. Every time I enable it following problem comes.

1. See language-wise site problem:

When visiting the website, I found strange thing:

hidden link - top navigation totally gone, search icon and hamburger menu - all gone

hidden link - does not show cart items, search icon and hamburger menu

hidden link - showing all items ok
hidden link - all comes, this is the default language of this website.

Thank you for sharing the access information. This time, I was able to log in successfully.

Before starting the investigation, I checked the theme and plugin status, and I noticed that the Flatsome theme installed on your site is quite outdated (version 3.13.3, released on 30.03.2021).

Flatsome has improved its compatibility with WPML in later versions, and the latest available version is 3.20.5.

Could you please update the Flatsome theme to the latest version and then check again? Since you are using the latest version of WPML, it’s also important to ensure your theme is updated as well to maintain proper compatibility.

After updating, please clear both your site cache and browser cache, and then test again. Hopefully, the issue will be resolved after the update.
