Background of the issue:
I have some pages and posts that have already been translated using WPML. After the initial translation, I made some manual edits to the automatic translation. Then, I needed to make tweaks to the English page and selected retranslation so that the new sections would be translated as well.
Symptoms:
Retranslation is overriding the manual tweaks made to the initial translation, causing duplicitous efforts on the editing side.
Questions:
Can a page be submitted for retranslation and only have the autotranslation reference and translate the net new content?
Can you share the documentation or some guidance as to the recommended way to accomplish this?
1. Create the English page
2. Translate to Spanish
3. Tweak the Spanish translation so it reads as desired
4. Publish the pages
5. Page then requires update - contents are added to English page
6. Translation is initiated, but it retranslates the whole pages removing the manual translation edits and requiring a full review/update of the Spanish page.
Is there a way to have a retranslation target only new or changed content on a page? Any guidance or documentation on this would be very helpful!

This is expected, as you can not use "WPML Translation Editor" and "WordPress Editor" as translation methods at the same time.
The translation method is set on the right sidebar of the WordPress Editor on the original content.
It can be:
"WPML Translation Editor"
or
"WordPress Editor"
You can not use the "WPML Translation Editor" as a translation method and then adjust the translation using the "WordPress Editor". The WPML Translation Editor does not recognize such edits.
We'd like to be able to use the auto-translations, but there are instances where we will need to save preferred translations for certain strings as the WPML Translation does need some tweaks. Is configuring the glossary the method to use to train auto-translations so this doesn't happen in the future?
If we auto-translate a page and then need to add in an additional content block, are you saying that we must manually translate the new content else the entire page will have to be retranslated with the WPML Translation Editor?

The glossary can be used in case an automatic translation needs to be adjusted. If you use the translation engine "DeepL" this will happen automatically when translating the content.
- To use automatic translation you need to use the Advanced Translation Editor
- When using this editor, WPML will make sure that the same design and layout is applied in all languages
To use different designs or layouts in different languages you need to switch the translation method to "WordPress Editor" - only this way you will not longer be able to translate automatically.
One final question I think - can we initiate the translation for a page with one of the translation services as the method and thereafter modify the translation method to WordPress Editor and manage adjustments that way?

I am at this point unsure as I have not tested XLIFF import/export while using the WordPress Editor. Usually, XLIFF import/export relies on the Translation Management and this requires the WPML Translation Editor.
The XLIFF import usually will be editable on the Classic Translation Editor. The newer Advanced Translation Editor does not support this feature and will not make use of those translations.
Could you please confirm:
Does the XLIFF import/export work if you switch the translation method to WPML Translation Editor?
Switching to "WordPress Editor" afterward should not be an issue.
