This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You have reactivated WPML on your site to translate it into Italian and have set it to 'Translate What You Choose'. However, you encounter an error stating 'The original sentence includes formatting markers. However, not all markers are applied to the translation'. Additionally, when trying to edit the home page in Italian using Elementor, the WPML Auto translation tool opens instead of allowing normal translation.
Solution:
To resolve this issue and use Elementor for translations, you need to disable the WPML editor. Here's how you can do it:
1. Go to the homepage in your original language.
2. In the Languages box, find the toggle to switch between the WPML editor and the WordPress editor.
3. Switch to the WordPress editor.
4. A pop-up will appear asking if you want this change to apply to all pages, all post types, or just this page. Make your selection accordingly.

If this solution does not resolve your issue, or if it seems outdated or irrelevant to your specific case, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Background of the issue:
I enabled WPML again after many years and I want to translate my site to Italian. I explicitly set in WPML > "Translate What You Choose You decide what to translate and who’ll translate it".

Plus, I can't get some strings to be translated cause an error keeps popping up "The original sentence includes formatting markers. However, not all markers are applied to the translation"

Symptoms:
When I tried to edit the home page in Italian, it opened the Auto translation tool instead of allowing me to translate my site normally using Elementor.

Questions:
How can I access my Elementor page to translate my site normally?

It is easy to disable the WPML editor. Simply go to the homepage in your original language. In the Languages box, there is a toggle to disable/enable the WPML editor or the WordPress editor. Switch this to the WordPress editor. Once you do that, you will see a pop up asking if you want this change for all pages, all post types, or just this page. You can select all.

Ok thanks Lauren for coming back - at least now I know (my 2 cents: it should be much easier, as I landed on that from the main "Pages" menu, where I was clicking on the "+" button under the lang of choice, and there is NO way to go to the ordinary editor).

BTW, now if I try editing the element it says smth like "The content area has not been found on your page".

is this related to Elementor or WPML?

thanks again

That is a message related to Elementor. When that message pops up, it typically means you are using a template to insert content on the page. Make sure you are translating both pages and templates where you are creating the site content.
