This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
If you're experiencing issues where superscripts in your original pages are not being added to translations in WPML, and instead, a space appears, we have a solution that might help.
Solution:
We recommend following these steps to address the superscript issue:
1. Navigate to your Dashboard > Pages.
2. Open the edit screen of the original page. Look for a pencil/circle/gear icon in the sidebar options under the "Languages" section.
3. Make a minor change, such as adding an extra blank space at the end of a sentence or paragraph.
4. Save your changes.
5. A circular arrow should appear beside the links for the second languages, indicating that an update is required.
6. Edit the translation again and ensure it is saved up to 100% translated.

Please note that this solution might become irrelevant due to updates or may not apply to your specific case. If the issue persists, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If necessary, do not hesitate to open a new support ticket at WPML support forum for further assistance.

Background of the issue:
I have a site where the original pages have superscript to add citations, and WPML is not adding them to the translations. Instead, the system adds a space. You can see the issue on this page: hidden link, this is the original hidden link

I share screenshots with an example, it happens in many instances in all pages we update or newly add.

Symptoms:
I expected to see the superscripts in the translations the same way they show in the English original. Instead, the system adds an extra line (space).

Questions:
Why is WPML not adding superscripts to translations?
How can I ensure superscripts are correctly displayed in translated pages?

Hi,

Welcome to WPML support. The spacing that I see in the screenshot should not affect the front end if you disable the AutoP feature of WordPress.

Would you please add the line below to the functions.php of your theme?

remove_filter( 'the_content', 'wpautop' );

That will deactivate the default space addition. See if it fixes the issue?

Thanks.

Thank you, Christopher. I will try this solution. Why is this happening now, when it has never happened since we started using WPML (3 or 4 years ago)?

Hi,

I am not sure about that. But please get back to us with the result.

If it works, then all good; if not, I will need you to replicate the same issue on a clean installation here:

Thanks.

Hello Christopher,

That solution removed spaces in unwanted places (as well as the intended places) making different paragraphs into one all along the different pages.

I have replicated the original issue in the sandbox site. There is something wrong with the markers:
English version hidden link
Spanish version (note that it is the spanish version, even if I left it in English) hidden link

Hi Jorge,

Thank you. I also tested and found out that the problem happens only if the Classic editor or the Classic block is used.

Normal Gutenberg block content does not have the issue.

I created a report and escalated the issue to the second tier for further investigation.

I will get back to you as soon as I have an answer.

Just FYI it might take time.

Thanks.

Hi,

A new version of the Advanced Translation Editor has been released. Would you please follow the steps below to see if the issue you are expoeriencing is fixed?

- Go to your Dashboard > Pages.
- Open the edit screen of the original page. You should see a pencil/circle/gear icon in the sidebar options under the "Languages" section.
- Make a small change, for example, add an extra blank space at the end of a sentence/paragraph.
- Save it.
- You should now see that a circular arrow appears beside the 2nd languages links, this means that an update is required.
- Edit the translation again and save it up to 100% translated.

Thanks.
