This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client frequently moves their site between a staging (development) environment and a LIVE environment and inquires whether it is necessary to use a migration code to continue using translation credits when both the original and the copy are at the exact same URL.
Solution:
We recommend using the automatic WPML registration feature for easy moves between production, development, and staging environments, which can be found in our documentation: https://wpml.org/faq/automatic-wpml-registration-using-php-for-easy-moves-between-production-development-and-staging/.
When migrating the site from STAGING to PRODUCTION, on the production site, you should set the live site as the "new" place where the site exists from now on by choosing the "No / I changed the address of the site to this new one" option as shown in our documentation: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/using-advanced-translation-editor-when-you-move-or-use-a-copy-of-your-site/.
If you do not use credits on staging, there is no need to connect that environment.

I frequently move my site from a staging (development) environment to a LIVE environment and vice versa.

I never use translation credits in the staging environment, so I just leave the LIVE site's WPML site key in place, regardless of which environment I'm working in.

I was told that when pushing my site from the staging environment to the LIVE environment that I should mark the site as "a copy" as opposed to "a replacement."

My question is, seeing as the original and "the copy" are at the exact same URL (see attached image), is it necessary to use a migration code to continue using translation credits, or will this work, automatically, regardless?

Hi there.

First of all, if you constantly move from staging to production, you might find this helpful:
https://wpml.org/faq/automatic-wpml-registration-using-php-for-easy-moves-between-production-development-and-staging/

Then, in regards to your question, when you migrate the site from STAGING to PRODUCTION, on production, in the backend, I would set that live site as the "new" place where the site exists from now on.

Practically, I would choose the "No / I changed the address of the site to this new one" option that you see in the first screenshot here:
https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/using-advanced-translation-editor-when-you-move-or-use-a-copy-of-your-site/

If you never use credits on staging, I wouldn't connect that.

I hope that you will find this information helpful. 🙂
