This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: If you're experiencing issues where the auto-translated product descriptions do not maintain the original line breaks, resulting in all paragraphs merging into one, we can help.
Solution: We recommend turning off the "I prefer bigger segments" option in the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) and then resending the product for automatic translation. Make sure to select the "Overwrite existing translations" option. This workaround is detailed in our errata page, which you can find here: https://wpml.org/errata/line-breaks-are-ignored-when-using-the-advanced-translation-edior/.
Additionally, subscribing to the comments on the errata page will keep you updated on when the issue is resolved.
Please note that this solution might be outdated or not applicable to your specific case. Background of the issue:
I am trying to use the auto translator to translate the product description from Dutch to German. The original product description in Dutch can be seen here: hidden link. The auto translated product description in German can be seen here: hidden link.
Symptoms:
The auto translated description does not maintain the line breaks from the original product description. Instead, all the paragraphs are merged into one paragraph.
Questions:
Why does the auto translated description not maintain the line breaks from the original product description?
How can I ensure that the auto translated description maintains the same formatting as the original product description?
I've checked a few things and looks like ATE is doing it well. For example, breaking on each punctuation (full stop or dot in this case) and separating sentences in the translation editor.
So I joined sentences to make paragraphs as in original product description, completed and saved the translation.
However, on frontend and in WordPress editor, for the translation it is still showing as one-merged-big-paragraph text.
I'm discussing with the team for a solution, because so far it is more likely to be a theme based thing. Because there are no physical line breaks (i.e. paragraph or line break tag).
I'll get back to you as soon as find some solution or a workaround.
Thank you for the update. The theme using on super-seat.com is a custom build theme. This theme is also present on the staging site. But we also tested it with the 2024 theme. So if it is theme based thing, would you imply that all themes have this issue?
I've tried this by turning off “I prefer bigger segments” in ATE and then sending the product again for automatic translation. Please note that when sending again for translation, select "Overwrite existing translations" option.
Now it should work fine, hidden link.
I'll recommend to subscribe to the comments on the said errata, so when the issue is resolved, you'll know about it.
Thank you for the workaround. This is indeed solving this issue as you can see: hidden link
I also tested it with two other products and with both the line breaks are correct. So at least for us and for now this issue is (temp) solved. I hope the dev team can solve it entirely.
I will as you recommend subscribe to the errata. So I will be kept up to date about it.
