[Resolved] Translated pages become disconnected from the original language page
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client is experiencing issues with a multilingual site where, upon adding a new language, it sometimes becomes the 'translation of' language, causing other languages to disconnect from the original English language.
Solution: 1. We asked the client to replicate the issue to better understand the cause and to prevent it from happening in the future. 2. We provided a guide to help reconnect the pages: https://wpml.org/faq/how-to-link-already-translated-pages/. 3. If the client sees a dropdown menu labeled 'This is a translation of' while editing a page, and there is no 'Connect with translations' link, we suggested selecting 'none' from the dropdown menu, saving the page, and then reconnecting it as necessary.
Please note that the solution provided might be outdated or not applicable to your case. If the issue persists, we highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. I'm running a live site with 22 languages, and regularly adding new ones.
Sometimes when adding a new language, it seems to take over as the "translation of" language, and other languages become disconnected from the original language. English is set as the default language.
I can't figure out how to re-link these pages back to the original english, and I would like to know how I can prevent this from happening in the future.
My page editor screen isn't showing a "Connect with translations" link.
When I'm adding a page translation, I click the plus icon on the pages list. In this case, after saving the page in the translation editor I noticed that the page slug had been changed from courses to courses-2. I then manually changed the slug back to courses.
Does this give a hint as to what might be going on?
Have you tried checking the "Connect with translation" link from the secondary languages (not the original language)? You need to open the translated version of a page for editing.
Could you please temporarily deactivate all non-WPML plugins and test if the issue persists? Please make sure to back up your database before making any changes.
Yes, both screenshots I've posted are from secondary languages that have somehow become disconnected from the original language (English).
On some pages that are still connected to the original, I see a dropdown that says "This is a translation of". But nowhere do I see a Connect with translation button.
If you encounter a dropdown menu labeled "This is a translation of" while editing a page, it is expected that there should be no "Connect with translation" link present, as the page is already connected to a translation. You could try selecting "none" from the dropdown menu, saving the page, and reconnecting it as necessary. Based on the screenshot provided, the original page appears in Arabic and has translations in other languages but not English.
Arabic was not the original language, but was added as a translation of English. It somehow became disconnected and set as the original language of the page.
For a specific example, my "Courses" page (original in English) has been translated into all of the other languages. But now in the pages list it shows plus icons instead of edit icons, as the translations of this page are no longer connected to this original language.
Now if I go to view the pages list in another language, it shows the edit/update icons instead of the plus icons, showing that it thinks this is the original language (when it's not).
But if I go into edit that page (Japanese in this example) it gives me no options to set another language as the original.
I need to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site – preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated if possible – in order to be of better help. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.
