Background of the issue:
I am translating blog posts using WPML and expect the original post’s feature image to be automatically copied to all translated versions. The site I need help with is hidden link.

Symptoms:
After translation (manual or automated), the feature image is missing from the translated posts and needs to be manually re-added.

Questions:
How can I ensure the feature image is automatically included in translations?

Technical precision note: our WordPress is hosted on AWS (kubernetes-orchestrated) and therefore, our images are not hosted "inside" the wordpress instance, but uploaded to an S3 bucket. We use for that the Media Cloud plugin (hidden link) . No issue so far but since this ticket is about media translation, I assume this plugin might play a role.

Thank you for contacting WPML support. While you are waiting for one of my colleagues to take this ticket and work on it, let me provide you with first debugging steps or if I can perhaps help with the issue quickly. Let's check a few things. First, are you using this plugin that is compatible with WPML? https://wpml.org/plugin/wp-offload-s3/? If so, please be sure to follow their documentation here: hidden link

Next, when you edit a post, in the Languages box there are two checkboxes and one is to duplicate featured image. Make sure that is checked in the original post. If it was not checked, please check that box, then update the translation and let us know if this copied the media over.

Lastly, you can go to WPML -> Media Translation, make sure the option is ticked to copy media to translations and click start to run the sync.

Hello Laureen,

Thanks for jumping in.

1. We use Media Cloud - WP offload-S3 did not meet our requirements.
2. I've attached a screenshot of our current settings for WPML Media translation. They seem to match what you suggested. Let me know if that is not the case. What does the "Start" button do exactly?

Hi,

I'll continue to help you with this issue.

1. The Media Cloud plugin you are using is unknown to us. We might be facing a compatibility issue. But I can't be sure of that yet. Please notice the following.

A. On their website, they are declaring compatibility with WPML. hidden link.

B. The state that it is compatible with the Pro version and not compatible with the free or basic versions. hidden link. Please ensure to use the Pro version for compatibility with WPML.

In light of this, please also consider contacting them to get help with this issue.

2. Your Media translation settings seem alright.

The Start button, once clicked, starts applying the checked options. What is relevant in your case is the 'Duplicate the featured images for translated content' option.

Please be aware that each post has an individual option for this. The general options in WPML -> Settings -> Media translation may not take effect if the featured image options in each post are not enabled. Please see the attached screenshot. It also might be that you will need to update the translated post to display the feature image.

I hope that this information is helpful to you.

If you need further help, please share your site's Debug information. You can read about it here: http://wpml.org/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/

Regards,
Itamar.

Hello,

We have checked that 'Duplicate the featured images for translated content' was always on for the original post and the translated post, meaning this is not the reason for the issue. Can you give us further advise on how to figure this out?
