This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem:
When you change a page in the original language (EN), the WordPress pages list does not show that a translation update is required. Instead of showing the update needed symbol (circular arrows), the pen symbol remains for each language. Clicking on the pen symbol takes you to the WordPress editor instead of the WPML editor.
Solution:
First, please check what you have under WPML → Support → Advanced Translation Editor → Error Logs. Next, update your WPML plugin and add-ons to the latest stable version, which is currently 4.9.1. This version includes the latest bug fixes and improvements that might help resolve your issue. You can find the latest versions in your account under My Account -> Downloads. If you do not see the updates, you may need to click the 'Check for updates' button in the Plugins → Add New Plugin → Commercial tab. Remember to back up your database before proceeding with the update. If the issue persists after the update, it might be due to a different problem or the solution might be outdated. We recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If this does not resolve your issue, please open a new support ticket at WPML support forum.
