Background of the issue:
I am developing a site with 20 individual domains, each assigned to a specific country and language. For Belgium (models118.be), I need to manage the country's two main languages: Dutch (Flemish) for Flanders and French for Wallonia. WPML currently defaults to French for Belgium, which is not suitable for users in Flanders.
Symptoms:
WPML automatically assigns French as the default language for Belgium, causing users from Flanders to see the site in French instead of Dutch.
Questions:
Does WPML support regional language detection within a single country?
Can WPML automatically redirect users to the correct language version based on their location (geolocation)?
If WPML does not support this, what is the best way to achieve this functionality?
before your ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues, please allow me to walk you through some initial debugging steps. This will help speed up the support process.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean. WPML loads the language that is set in WPML → Languages for your site. Could you please check the configuration there?
WPML only provides a browser language-based redirect. This means that if a visitor's browser is set to a specific language, they will be redirected to that version of the site. However, WPML does not offer geolocation-based redirection—this would require a third-party plugin.
Best regards,
Marcel
