Background of the issue:
I am experiencing issues with WPML making changes to my .htaccess file on my websites, hidden link and Aboutthatsmile. My host mentioned that the WordPress clause in the .htaccess file was causing subpages not to load. They added a more standard WordPress setup clause above the existing one, which resolved the issue. The changes seem to be related to a language plugin.

Symptoms:
WPML keeps modifying the .htaccess file, causing subpages not to load.

Questions:
Why does WPML modify the .htaccess file?
How can I prevent WPML from causing issues with my .htaccess file?
