Background of the issue:
I am working on a site under development. After updating an English string into French, the entire page is overwritten in English, except for the French string. My settings for the French page are 'Duplicate Content' and 'Translate independently', so it shouldn't have any impact. I am following this procedure: https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/

Symptoms:
After updating a string, the entire page that contains the string gets overwritten in the original language.

Questions:
Why is the entire page overwritten in English after updating a string to French?
How can I prevent the page from being overwritten in the original language when updating a string?

You can see the behavior in action here:

Thank you for contacting WPML support.

Could you kindly provide a step-by-step process with screenshots? This way, I can observe and comprehend the issue more effectively. Or re-upload the video as it cannot be opened.

Hi,
can you please try it again. The video link works perfectly fine. The upload limit is 1MB which is far too little for a video and you don't allow any other extension but png, jpg etc.

Thank you,
Armin

Thank you for the update. I managed to view the video using a different browser.

The option to choose the translation editor is not visible on your video because you are on the translated page, not the original one.

When you duplicate a page, you have to choose whether to translate it independently each time.

Could you please add the following constant in your wp-config.php file and see if it helps?

define( 'WPML_TRANSLATION_AUTO_UPDATE_ENABLED', false );

Thank you for your feedback. I added the line of code to the wp-config.php but the behavior is the same. After updating the string, the translated page is English. I also deleted the original French page and retried it. Same result.

Feel free to test it yourself.

I can give you the credentials to our staging.

I need to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site – preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated if possible – in order to be of better help. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.

I want to thank you for your patience. I've taken a look at the issue you reported and have a better understanding of what's happening. It seems to be a workflow issue. Let me explain.

When you are translating a page using the WordPress editor (https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/using-different-translation-editors-for-different-pages/), the "read more" text that you are translating in WPML → String Translation is part of the translation package in WPML Translation Editor. So, when you translate the "read more" from there, the entire translation package applies to the page, but other strings remain untranslated (see attached screenshot).

Here are my suggestions:

1. If you are using a different layout design for other languages, continue translating using the WordPress editor and also translate such text as "read more" from there (see attached screenshot).

2. If you are sticking with the current layout design for all languages, consider using the WPML Translation Editor to translate your pages.

I hope this explanation helps.

Thank you, Andrey! I understand the issue and I'll follow the workflow.

However, I must say that I wasn't expecting this behavior and I hope it won't happen accidentally in the future.

I really wished there was a general setting in WPML to disable any sync. In the past I opened a similar ticket where I ran in this workflow behavior issue.

The problem is that you think you are doing it correctly and suddenly everything is "gone". No warning. Designwise this is a poor experience. Please consider this as a constructive feedback for your developers, because changing a string should never have this kind of impact.

Again, thank you for figuring out the issue.

Have a great day.

Kind regards,
Armin
