This is really outrageous. I just lost an entire day of work due to WPML’s Advanced Translation Editor silently failing to create translated posts.

I created a brand-new post from scratch, clicked the + to add a translation, translated all content (including media), clicked Save & Complete, and published — and nothing was saved. The translation remained “In Progress,” no translated post was created, and all the work I entered was effectively lost.

I spent the entire afternoon trying to fix this using WPML’s troubleshooting tools, and only when I had lost hope did I switch to the Classic Translation Editor, which finally allowed me to save and publish the translation — but I was forced to re-enter all translations from scratch.

I have been a paid WPML client for many years, and I have never encountered a bug that is so disruptive. This is completely unacceptable — I cannot rely on your plugin for production work if the editor discards content without warning.

This caused real lost of time, effort, and money. I expect guidance on how to recover lost translations, a fix to prevent this from happening again, and confirmation that your team is aware of this critical issue.

Please escalate this to 2nd-level support immediately.

Hello,

I am sorry to hear that you ran into such an issue, but please take note that there should be nothing to worry about the already saved translations inside the Advanced Translation Editor, as they are saved in its translation memory.

Further, on our system, it looks like many of the jobs from today were actually completed and saved in our translation system, but somehow the content is not picked up from WordPress.

I'd like to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to the website to investigate the issue further.

You'll find the necessary fields below the comment section if you log in to leave the next reply. The information you provide will be private, meaning only you and I will be able to see and access it.

IMPORTANT
Please be sure to create a backup of the website and database before granting us access.

If you don't see the "wp-admin / FTP" fields, your login credentials for the post and website will be set to "PUBLIC." Do NOT publish the information unless you see the required wp-admin / FTP fields.

I may need to install a plugin called "All In One WP Migration" to create a copy of the website on which I can investigate the problem more thoroughly.

I would also be very grateful if you could provide a staging site on your server for this purpose.

If you have any questions about creating such a staging site, please contact your hosting provider. Please ensure that WPML is also registered on this staging site at https://wpml.org/de/account/websites/.

If you are unable to provide such a copy of the website for testing, please let me know on this ticket.

Hello,

I sadly not yet received an answer from you.

Note that we need access to your site to be able to assist you.

The issue you are experiencing could be related to a third-party plugin or server limitation and requires testing before we can take further steps.

The private reply form is enabled, so that you can provide admin access to the site.
If you could set up a staging site for testing, it would be highly appreciated, but please make sure to register WPML on such a new site.

If you can not provide a staging site, I can offer to take a local copy for testing and further escalation.

We can not escalate issues right away to second-tier support without confirming what is causing the issue.

Suggestions:
Revise WPML > Support > Installer Support and click "Check now" to verify that WPML is registered correctly and no APIs are blocked.

Revise WPML > Support > ATE Error log for given errors and report them to us.

In case you do not need further assistance, please feel free to close this ticket.

Best regards
Andreas

Dear Andreas,
Apologies for not contacting you earlier.
Check Now produced no errors.
No ATE error logs (the system is now set to the old editor)
This is a WP Bakery site. Some suggestions claim this is the culprit...
The post in question is my first attempt to work with ATE.
I've cloned another post with a WPML approved plugin (Yoast's) first, but got problems with the cloned translation, as it wasn't updated at all and when I press the language switcher it seemingly showed another post (the translation clone that was not updated as the ATE didn't preform the Save).
Then I created a completely new post and copied-pasted elements from another post, to start fresh with no parallel translated post, to no avail.
This is a very big website to produce a clone, I'll have to ask my hosting company if it can be done within my current server configuration.
Let me get back to you with that.
In the meantime, if you have any other suggestions, pls let me know.
Cheers!

I may give you credentials so you could copy the website yourself with All In One WP Migration, can even install this in advance, but the private mode is not enabled anymore.

We sadly used to have some temporary connectivity issues on our translation server.

Your site is currentlys et up to use the "Classic Translation Editor". Take kindly note that translations completed on the Classic Translation Editor will not be available if you switch the translation method to "Advanced Translation Editor", unless you earlier used the ATE for creating the translation. In this case, it is saved inside the translation memory.

Would you like to enable the Advanced Translation Editor inside WPML's settings again and verify if the translations do work as expected now?

The translations made with ATE are there, but I needed to retranslate all with Classic as it wasn't saving the page and I had to publish it immediately.
I don't think it would be a good idea to try to duplicate the page now and retranslate it as it would save some pic texts that i don't want to alter at the moment. I really wonder how it populates the images captions in ATE - from the translation memory or from the media translations?
And if the saving of a page depends on connectivity with another server, that constantly has issues - that's not a way to work...
What I have to check now? I don't understand. ATE is not saving the page in Bakery. i didn't check in Gutenberg as don't work with Gutenberg in this website. I turn to you for help - If I wanted to spend hours on testing i would have done it myself but i run out of options.
Kindly help!

To help us investigate the issue with translations remaining in “In Progress” status, could you please provide the following details:

- The URL of the content you were trying to translate.

- The translation method you intended to use (Advanced Translation Editor or Classic Translation Editor).

This information will allow us to trace the translation job in the logs and confirm whether the problem is related to synchronization or editor compatibility. Please note that only the Advanced Translation Editor includes an integrated translation memory, so identifying the method used is essential for troubleshooting.

Thank you for your cooperation — once we have this example, we’ll be able to move forward with a precise diagnosis.

Well, now I finally got the time to test this.
Your plugin is a mess really.
I see that you did switched the system to ATE and created a page.
So I added the page name (title) to the page and tried to translate it (before adding the page name no fields were shown at the ATE but 2 - while there are many more).
OK now all the seemingly relevant fields were shown and I did translated it and even was able to press the Save and Complete button and redirected to the Page page. WOW
(still not sure what is going on with media translations - the fields were not automatically populated with the existing media translations of the photo which do exist in the system. So I copied-pasted them)
I set a need to review in settings.
So now I get the next erratic behavior of your plugin - upon publishing, it didn't create a post in the translation language (Heb), but another copy of the English one. WTF
In the job list under translations - this is not in a queue for review, but says Translation in Progress and it shown only once.
Pls Check and Advice.
Your system is weird...
This is the page I tested

The translation for this page is not completing for some unexpected reason.

Before we take any further steps:
- Take a complete backup of the site incl. database
- Make sure that all plugins are updated

Optional:
- Ask your hosting support if a server update for PHP would be possible, as the site runs on 7.4.33 while WordPress recommends at least PHP 8.3.
- Make sure that only the latest version of the Basel Parent Theme is installed, currently there are three installed versions

After that, try to save the translation again. If this does not solve the issue, please let me know.

Thanks for your reply.
As for the Basel theme, only one version is operative (+child theme). I don't think it has anything to do with the translation issue. But I can move those files.
As for the PHP version, this transition is planned but it won't happen over night. There are several websites on this server, some need special upgrade for that and administering such transition for other clients with their own servers, I know the hosting company doesn't do this in a push of a button. They create mirror server, check that everything runs as expected etc. So this is not an option at the moment although maybe it is causing the issue, but you should know your system compatibility issues better than I. If it operates only on PHP 8.x - it should be noted IMHO.
I'll keep you updated.
Cheers!

Ok, I will be taking a local copy to investigate this further.

Note that I already made a small change, which solved one issue, but did not solve the fact that translations are not completing after all.

I changed the config at WPML > Settings > Custom XML Configuration slightly to:

<wpml-config>
  <shortcodes>
    <shortcode>
      <tag>basel_title</tag>
      <attributes>
        <attribute encoding="allow_html_tags">title</attribute>
        <attribute>subtitle</attribute>
        <attribute>after_title</attribute>
      </attributes>
    </shortcode>
    ...
</wpml-config>

Why I did this?
The page "Share your experience" uses a Custom Widget called "Basel Title" which is coming from the Basel Theme. You are using as content

<strong>Join In</strong>

.

To be able to translate these texts inside the Advanced Translation Editor, the shortcode attribute must look like this:

 <attribute encoding="allow_html_tags">title</attribute>

On a local copy of your site the job completes as expected. See screenshot. I will be taking another look on your site and then get back to you.

Thank you for your patience!

Apart from the XML config issue, there was an issue about a non-matching ATE ID on your site, and this was why the Advanced Translation Editor was not able to connect to our translation server.

The issue is now fixed, and jobs are completing again.

New issue: The Promo Banner widget translation is not applied on the frontend. Anyhow, on the local copy of your site, I tested in a minimal setup, and the translation worked out.

Please take a backup of your site, including the database, then update all the plugins.

After that, edit the original page "Security Tattoo Attempt", save the page, and then complete the translation again.

If this does not solve the issue, please let me know.
