auto translate everything / flag icon not appearing in menu

Problem:
You are experiencing issues with the flag icon not appearing in the main menu after switching to 'auto translate everything' mode in WPML, despite not clicking the 'Sync Menu' button or manually creating translations. Additionally, you encountered a PHP Fatal error indicating an exhausted memory limit.
Solution:
First, increase the WordPress memory limit by adding the following lines to your wp-config.php file:

Add these lines above the '/* That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */' line. This adjustment should help resolve the memory issue and allow for smoother operation of WPML functionalities.

Next, ensure your site key is correctly registered to use automatic updates. If updates are not working, generate a new site key by deleting the current site URL from your WPML account at https://wpml.org/account/sites and re-adding it. This action will provide a new site key. Then, unregister and re-register WPML on your site with the new key by navigating to Plugins -> Add New -> Commercial tab and following the prompts to update or enter the new site key.

Lauren WPML Supporter since 10/2015 Languages: English (English ) Timezone: America/New_York (GMT-04:00)	if you have the debug log enabled, please go to wp-contnet and look for the debug.log file and tell me what you see there. If you don't have debug enabled, please access the site via FTP and rename the SitePress Multilingual CMS plugin. If WPML was the issue that crashed the site, renmaing this folder should deactivate WPML and you can then access the backend again. After this, enable the debug log so that we can find out what the error is. Then, rename WPML folder back to its original name and try to activate WPML. If it crashes again, you should at least then be able to see the error and we can get more information from there.

jamesC-69	I have debug mode turned on but in the Kinsta logs it's not showing any recent errors, so I'll have to try your other suggestion with SFTP access... will let you know if I'm successful...

jamesC-69	just checked in Chrome incognito and the site appears to be online again, although I'm not yet able to log in... the URL hidden link once clicked defaults to hidden link which of course doesn't work because the plugin 'Hide Login' is active.

jamesC-69	I also changed the folder name for the Events Calendar so it would be inactive. I don't plan on using it in the future.

jamesC-69	well I'm not sure how it happened but I was able to fully login to the staging admin dashboard... perhaps some of the file changes I made earlier in the day finally propagated and now things are working fine (as of this writing!!) I deleted several unneeded posts and drafts to clean things up a bit. I also added a page and a couple of new templates to match the live site's content. I have not yet translated them.

Lauren WPML Supporter since 10/2015 Languages: English (English ) Timezone: America/New_York (GMT-04:00)	The biggest thing that stands out from the debug log is the Fatal Error: PHP Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 268435456 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 16384 bytes). So you will need to make sure you have enough WordPress memory. You can add this to wp-config.php to increase WP memory: /** Memory Limit / define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '512M'); define( 'WP_MAX_MEMORY_LIMIT', '512M' ); Add it above the line / That's all, stop editing! Happy blogging. */ Once that is resolved, you should be able to translate pages/posts/templates by going to WPML -> Translation Management and send them to translation. jamesC-69	according to WPML support page, there is 512M for PHP and 512M for WP. However I noticed that as of Aug 6, an error has been happening: wpml: Unable to register: Site key not matching subscription-fetching 2024-27-08 07:08:52 is there a switch within WPML to fix this ? WPML plugin cannot connect to wpml.org "WPML needs to connect to its server to check for new releases and security updates. Something in the network or security settings is preventing this. Please allow outgoing communication to wpml.org to remove this notice." I need to make the required update to WPML CMS but should I try to get the key working first ?

Lauren WPML Supporter since 10/2015 Languages: English (English ) Timezone: America/New_York (GMT-04:00)	The site key needs to be registered correctly in order to use automatic update. To resolve the site key, go to Plugins -> Add New -> Commercial tab and click Check for Updates. If you have a correct site key, you should be able to update from here. If you get an error, try generating a new site key. Please go to http://www.wpml.org/account/sites and delete the URL. Then add it back. this will generate a new site key. Then, go to Plugins -> Add New -> Commercial and click the link to unregister WPML from your site. You will then see the field where you can enter the new site key to re-register the new key.

jamesC-69	Originally, WPML was activated on the live site. Then I copied its site key and added it to the staging site. That worked up until aug 6 which is probably when I deactivated WPML from the live site. I followed your first instructions and I made a screenshot of it showing that staging site is registered. I clicked 'Check for updates' and nothing happens... no error message...I also made a screenshot of the plugins showing similar registration. then I tried your second idea but I could not execute the steps... the little tool wheel next to the live site's URL gave me a permissions error... I couldn't edit or delete the URL. Also when I searched for the staging site's URL, it showed no such site connected, so now I'm confused. the reason I have WPML deactivated on the live site is that things got too messed up the way I first started translating things More importantly, I can't leave WPML active on the live site because the Spanish mode is incomplete and the menu is broken. Should I temporarily activate it to copy the key code and then paste it in the staging site key field like I did 3 weeks ago ?? My plan is to get the staging site working perfectly, and then migrate it to replace the live site. I hope that makes sense. Since WPML CMS needs an update, will clicking the update on the staging site cause it to crash again ?? I know the memory for WP is doubled now so hopefully that was the issue, instead of an issue with the key code and communicating with WPML.org I did the translations for the new content I added yesterday. It worked. Seems like the only thing left to do is correctly update WPML CMS plugin and then I can start the migration process via Kinsta host migration tool. thanks
