This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is using an old version of WPML and has lost the translation of the main menu in English. The '+ button' appears instead of the 'edit/pencil icon', and the client is unable to reconnect the existing English menu translation.

Solution:
1. We recommend updating to the latest version of WPML to see if the issue has been resolved in a more recent update.
2. Create a staging site to safely perform the update without risking the live site.
3. Make sure to back up the site before proceeding with the update.
4. After the backup, disable all other plugins and switch to the default WordPress theme.
5. Update WPML via the Plugin Manager on Plugins -> All Plugins in the 'commercial' tab.
6. Reactivate each plugin one by one and update them as needed.

Please note that translations are stored in the database and will not be lost during the plugin update. However, always ensure you have a complete backup before making any changes.

If the solution provided here is not relevant to your case, either because it's outdated or not applicable, we highly recommend checking the related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the issue persists, please open a new support ticket with us.

Hi,
I'm using a old version of WPML, but till now it was ok.
I have the italian language as primary, and english as secondary.
Suddenly I loose the main menu english translation (main navigation position), but the menu is till there. So now if I go to my 'main navigation menu', I can't find edit/pencil icon anymore, but + button.
I try by clicking on +, but then I goes to a new menu creation, and I can't set the English main menu that I have created (that is still there if I visit the English menus).

So, to recap: I've lost a menu translation and I'm not able 'to 'reconnect' (translate again) with the already translated menu, same as before.

I've also another menu (mobile menu) that is ok, well translated and it hasn't lost the translation.
At the moment the WPMl version is old, before upgrading it I would try to fix this issue. The site is online and I would like to avoid the risk of having a broken site event.

Thanks a lot

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML support. While you are waiting for one of my colleagues to take this ticket and work on it, let me provide you with the first debugging steps and try to help with the issue quickly.

I understand your concern, but since the WPML version is very old, we would first require you to update to the latest version and check if the issue still happens. Since maybe the issue is already fixed in the latest.

I advise making a staging site and updating there, disabling any other plugins and using WP default theme, and slowly reactivating each and updating them also if needed.

Please make a backup before proceeding.

Let us know how it goes and if you still have issues.

Regards,
Drazen

Hi,
thanks.
Just some questions about about updating WPML:
- do you mean update in the plugin manager wpml or delete previous version and reinstall the plugin?
- if so, in there the risk of loosing content/string/menu translations?

Thanks again

Hi,

both options are OK. I recommend you to update using the Plugin Manger on Plugins -> All Plugins in the tab "commercial".

There is no risk in loosing translations, as they are saved in your tables, not in the plugin files. As my colleague recommends, please always run a backup before.

Best Regards
Marcel
