This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client wanted to know if it is possible to change the existing French translations on their site to Canadian French, and if the 'Translate Everything Automatically' feature supports this along with compatibility with ACF.
Solution:
1. Changing Existing French to Canadian French:
- You can switch the existing French language to Canadian French by updating the locale in WPML. Navigate to "WPML > Languages", click on the "Edit Language" link, and change the locale for the French language from

fr_FR

(standard French) to

fr_CA

(Canadian French). This will associate the translated content with the Canadian French locale, but the actual content will remain unchanged.

2. Support for Canadian French by Microsoft and Google:
- Microsoft translation engines support Canadian French. However, Google Translate does not specifically support Canadian French translation. It is recommended to use Microsoft translation engines via WPML for automatic translations into Canadian French.

3. Automatic Translation After English Content Changes:
- The 'Translate Everything Automatically' feature will only automatically translate the content that has been updated in your default language. It does not retranslate the entire content; only the modified parts will be translated again.

4. Manual Translation of Strings:
- Strings are not automatically translated, but you can select the strings and send them for automatic translation. For more details, please check this guide: Automatically Translate Strings with WPML

5. Compatibility of Translate Everything Automatically with ACF:
- 'Translate Everything Automatically' is compatible with ACF. Ensure that the ACF Multilingual plugin is active on your site and the translation preference for the field is set to 'Translate'.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems outdated, we recommend opening a new support ticket. Background of the issue:
This is for salasobrien.com. The site is built with ACF. The primary language is English, and French is added for human translation. We'd like to change to Canadian French, and are considering changing to Translate Everything Automatically.

Symptoms:
N/A

Questions:
Is it possible to change the existing French to Canadian French to preserve content translated into French?
It looks like Microsoft and Google support Canadian French; is that right?
It looks like Translate Everything Automatically will automatically translate after English content is changed; is that right?
It looks like strings aren't automatically translated, but must be manually sent for translation; is that right?
It looks like Translate Everything Automatically will work with ACF; is that right?

Hello There,
Thanks for contacting WPML Support.

I understand what you're looking for. Let's address each of your questions one by one:

1. Changing Existing French to Canadian French:
- Yes, you can switch the existing French language to Canadian French by updating the locale in WPML. To do this, navigate to "WPML > Languages" and click on the "Edit Language" link. In the default locale column, change the locale for the French language from `fr_FR` (standard French) to `fr_CA` (Canadian French).

This way, the translated content will now be associated with the fr_CA locale, but the actual content will remain unchanged. If you have automatic translation enabled, future translations will now use the Canadian French locale if the Translation engine supports the locale.

2. Support for Canadian French by Microsoft and Google:
- The Microsoft translation engines support Canadian French, but there is no clear information available on whether Google Translate specifically supports Canadian French translation. The Google Translator can only translate contents into French. Therefore, it will be better to use the Microsoft translation engines via WPML to handle automatic translations into Canadian French.

3. Automatic Translation After English Content Changes:
- The "Translate Everything Automatically" feature in WPML will only automatically translate the content that has been updated in your default language. It does not retranslate the entire content; only the modified parts will be translated again.

4. Manual Translation of Strings:
- Yes, strings are not automatically translated but, you can select the strings and send them for Automatic translation. To understand the process, please check this guide: https://wpml.org/documentation/automatic-translation/automatically-translate-strings-with-wpml/

5. Compatibility of Translate Everything Automatically with ACF:
- Yes, "Translate Everything Automatically" works with ACF. WPML can automatically translate ACF fields, but you will need to make sure that the ACF Multilingual plugin is active on your site and translation preference for the field is set to "Translate".

I hope I've been able to address all your questions. If you have any further queries or need additional clarification, please don't hesitate to reach out. I'm here to help!

Best regards,
Prosenjit

Your answers are helpful. Thanks! Regarding support for Canadian French by Microsoft and Google, hidden link has green checkmarks for Microsoft and Google for Canadian French. hidden link doesn't show Canadian French, and neither does hidden link. Maybe hidden link needs to be corrected.
