The php_errorlog doesn't shown any new errors, and I can't see anything special in the apache log either (I can send it to you if you wish). I can't reproduce the errors either.
Can't some kind of tracing or debugging be activated in WPML to see why it generates incorrect links on images?
This is quite a tricky issue. After detailed troubleshooting, we were able to identify the root cause. It turned out to be a simple fix, but not easy to discover. It was due to a mismatch in the site URLs.
The Site URL showed as: hidden link
But in Settings >> General for both *WordPress Address (URL)* and *Site Address (URL)*, it was set to: hidden link
We corrected it to: hidden link
It is working as expected now after these steps:
1) Visit Settings >> Permalinks, resave the settings
2) Open the test pages for editing in German
3) Make a small content change to refresh translation settings
4) Update the page translations using the WPML Editor
5) Clear both site and browser caches
Please check the attached images and the following links for more details.
I can indeed confirm that it now works on the staging site. However, it still doesn't work on the production site. I added the custom XML in WPML -> Settings -> Custom XML like you did on the staging site.
The URL of the image in Media & Text blocks now appears in the Advanced Translation Editor and can be edited:
hidden link
but on the frontend it is still the incorrect untranslated version of the link that gets published:
hidden link
I'll leave things as they are for now, because I have more urgent matters to attend to.
Thank you for the updates. That does sound unusual. Just to confirm, have you tried the following steps? In our case, we only got the expected results after clearing the SG (SiteGround) caches.
1) Visit Settings >> Permalinks, resave the settings
2) Open the test pages for editing in German
3) Make a small content change to refresh translation settings
4) Update the page translations using the WPML Editor
5) Clear both the site (Site Ground) and browser caches
Please confirm this and let us know your feedback. Also, does the same issue occur with a newly created page?
Thank you for the updates. I am enabling the private option for the next reply. Please share the live site credentials, including FTP access, after taking a full site backup.
We are getting expected results on your live site after the following steps.
1) Deactivate the WPML Sticky Links plugin
2) Open the page for editing - hidden link
3) Made a minor change in the contents
4) Update the page
5) Update the English and French translations
6) Clear the caches
Please check it now. Refer to the following links for more details.

Therefore, could you please confirm if you are using the WPML Sticky Links plugin? It is often used to automatically correct sticky links and update them to the correct permalinks.
I do indeed use the Sticky Links plugin as certain permalinks have changed, and I remember a few weeks ago when I tried to revert the links to normal permalinks and remove the Sticky Links plugin, some links were broken and/or I got strange bugs in the Advanced Translation Editor.
Is using the Sticky Links plugin not recommended anymore? Is it incompatible with the Advanced Translation Editor?
Thank you for the feedback. We just wanted to confirm whether you are using WPML Sticky Links or not, as some users activate it without actually using its features. We will continue debugging the issue and get back to you soon. Please wait.
Thank you. In the meantime, you can try the following steps as a temporary workaround. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Please wait.
- Deactivate the Sticky Links plugin.
- Edit the page in the original language (the one with the link issue).
- Make a small change to the content.
- Update the page.
- Update the English and French translations.
- Clear all caches.
- Reactivate the Sticky Links plugin.
We are currently making major changes to the Sticky Links feature in the WPML development version. So, we would like to gather more details about the following problem.
I do indeed use the Sticky Links plugin as certain permalinks have changed,
and I remember a few weeks ago when I tried to revert the links to normal
permalinks and remove the Sticky Links plugin, some links were broken,
and/or I got strange bugs in the Advanced Translation Editor.
Therefore, please let us know:
- Does the problem happen on your staging site too?
- What are the exact steps to see the issue?
This will help us check and give you the right feedback.
I'm sorry, but I am really busy with other stuff right now. AFAIK, you still have access to both the staging site and the production site, and the problem occurred on both sites until you deactivated the Sticky Links plugin.
As for the steps to reproduce the problem, it has been described in this thread I think.
All the best,
Christophe
