Background of the issue:
I’m encountering an issue where media is automatically duplicated whenever I add a new language in WPML. I believe the settings under Media Translation might be responsible for this, so I tried to uncheck the following options: Translate existing media in all languages, Duplicate existing media for translated content, Duplicate the featured images for translated content. However, when I uncheck these options and click Apply, the settings are not saved. I also tried clicking the Start button after unchecking, but it begins a long process, and I’m unsure if that’s the correct way to apply the changes.

Symptoms:
Media is automatically duplicated when adding a new language, and changes to Media Translation settings are not saved.

Questions:
Could you confirm if this is the right way to stop media duplication?
Is there another method to save these settings properly?

Hello There,
Thanks for contacting WPML Support.

I understand what you're trying to achieve. If you don't want to duplicate images in other languages, go to "WPML > Settings", scroll to the "Media Translation" section, and under "How to handle media for new content," uncheck the options shown in this screenshot(hidden link) and click "Apply". The options that you've unchecked previously are more like troubleshooting options to adjust images in each language and if you refresh the page, they will appear selected again.

However, let me clarify what image duplication means in this context. WPML doesn’t duplicate the actual image files in your `wp-content/uploads` directory. Instead, it assigns a new ID to the same image with language-specific metadata in the Database. This ensures that the same image file is reused across different languages without increasing your server storage.

I hope this clarifies things. If you still prefer not to duplicate images in translations, please uncheck the options shown in the screenshot above before translating your posts/pages. This way, the images won’t be copied to the translation, and you’ll have the flexibility to add images to the translated content as needed.

Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or need clarification. I will be happy to help.

Best regards,
Prosenjit
