So we have automatic translation enabled on this website. And if i look in hidden link for a given media file (example "Salvus-Rome-Mini-1-elo-open-vol") it shows as translated (duplicated). It shows the same title as the original, wich is perfect.

But when we open up the ATE for the product where this media is used (hidden link) it shows as not translated and it wants me to "autotranslate" and this will cost credits. We don't want this. We just want the duplicated title wich also show in the Media Translation section.

Example
This one shows empty translations in the ATE:
hidden link

But in Media Translation it shows as already translated:

Hello,

You can exclude media from translation on the Advanced Translation Editor by going to WPML > Settings > Media Translation.

Disable the option to auto-detect media, then enter the manual setup.

At the bottom, disable the option to translate media together with the content.

You can, from that point on rely on the translations created at WPML > Media Translation.

Note that you can also edit the translations directly inside the media library, by switching the language inside the top admin bar.

Best regards
Andreas

Hello Andreas,

You say "From that point on", but what about existing media that shows up in the ATE?

I ask this because we tried this already, and it still showed the media in the ATE having supposedly no translations, but they did have the min the Media Translation.

Hope to hear from you.

Kind regards,
Dennis

If you exclude media from translation on the Advanced Translation Editor by going to WPML > Settings > Media Translation, then no media should appear any longer inside the Advanced Translation Editor.

On existing translation, you would only see the change after you made a change to the original content, which updates the translation status.

For now our client will leave it as is an translate it via ATE

But you really should fix that if a Media Translation is already done, it should show up like that in the ATE too.

So you can close the ticket (actually not resolved).

Thank you, I absolutely understand your conerns, but would like to explain quick something.

Currently WPML has the following option at WPML > Settings > Media Translations:

- Automatically detect best options for translating image texts (alt, caption, title)

If this option is enabled the media, will show up inside the WPML Translation Editor and will only be translated, if assigned to a post. When translating the media inside the WPML Translation Editor, the translations rely on the translation memory of this editor, which runs on an external server and is controled by an external system.

You would basically use this new recommended method, to only translate media inside the WPML Translation Editor and this is the only way how you could translate the media automatically.

If you disable the option to automatically detect media, the media by default will not longer be exposed on the WPML Translation Editor and users can create the translations manually inside the WordPress media library or at WPML > Media Translation.

Now, you could still opt-in to display media inside the WPML Translation Editor without auto-detecting the media, but so far I can confirm that what is displayed inside the WPML Translation Editor differs from what has been translated manually outside of it.

This said, I would suggest for now sticking to only one of both workflows:
a) Translate media inside the WPML Translation Editor
or
b) Translate media manually outside of the WPML Translation Editor

If you mix both methods you will end up overwriting your manual translations inside the media library and at WPML > Media Translation.

I will be escalating this issue now internally for further revision and get back to you once I receive feedback.
