This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client wants to change the URL slug from 'nieuws' to 'news' in the English version of their site.
Solution:
If you're experiencing this issue, we recommend you first check if the Slug Translation option is enabled in WPML. You can do this by navigating to WPML > Settings > Slug Translation. For more details, visit Translating URL slugs in WPML.

Next, go to WPML > Settings > Taxonomy Translation to translate the slug for your post categories. If 'nieuws' is used as a category, ensure to translate it at the same location. For a step-by-step guide on translating taxonomy terms, visit Translating Taxonomy Terms.

Please also check your WordPress permalink settings. If you are using a custom structure like '/nieuws/%postname%', note that this format is not translatable with WPML. We suggest switching to the 'Post name' structure instead.

If these steps do not resolve your issue, or if the solution seems outdated or not applicable to your case, we highly recommend opening a new support ticket. Additionally, check related known issues at WPML Known Issues, verify the version of the permanent fix, and confirm that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Hello,

It looks like you have a Blog page with the slug "news" and also a category base or category with the slug "nieuws".

Please go to WPML > Settings > Slug Translation and enable this option, in case it is disabled:
https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-page-slugs/#translate-url-slug-custom-post-type

Now, go to WPML > Settings > Taxonomy Translation and translate the slug for your post category.

Further, you might need to translate the categories at WPML > Taxonomy Translations.
https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/translating-post-categories-and-custom-taxonomies/#translating-your-taxonomy-terms-from-a-central-page

Best regards
Andreas

Hi Andreas,
The option slug translation is enabled.
You say:
go to WPML > Settings > Taxonomy Translation and translate the slug for your post category.

But I can't find that slug there.
Where to find this?
Thanks.

At WPML > Settings > Taxonomy Translation you would translate the base slug for post categories.

If "nieuws" is used as a category, then you need to translate the category at WPML > Taxonomy Translation.

If this will not clarify the issue I can offer to enable a private reply form on which you can provide me admin access to your site.

The provided username seems not to exist on the site. Please verify the provided information and leave me a message on this ticket once access to the site is granted.

Further, please revise the permalink settings of WordPress.

If you use a custom structure like /nieuws/%postname% kindly note that this is not translatable with WPML. I suggest in this case you use the "Post name" structure.

Hi Andreas,
Yes I was using a custom structure like /nieuws/%postname%
Why is this not translatable with WPML?
Thanks.

This is a backend string from WordPress and there is no way to translate the string "/nieuws/" as we can not register this custom permalink string on WPML > String Translation.
