This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is unable to update the WPML site key on a cloned development site and is receiving an alert stating "WPML plugin cannot connect to wpml.org".

Solution:
1. Unregister the old WPML key by navigating to the WordPress backend, then go to Plugins > Add New > Commercial.
2. Register with the new WPML key in the same location.
3. To address the connection alert, it may be a false-positive due to server caching. To verify, click the "check for updates" button in the Plugins > Add New > Commercial section. If the page refreshes and WPML still shows as registered, the alert is indeed a false positive and should clear when the cache refreshes.

Hi, I'm having a problem changing the site key of WPML on my development site. I'm undergoing a complete rebranding of my website and have cloned a copy of my old website to do this. I have a Blog subscription for WPML for my old website that I will continue to use for a while. My new, cloned site is currently under a temporary domain as it is in development. As the new site will be eventually go live under a different domain to my old site, I have purchased a new subscription for WPML for it. The second site already has WPML installed and configured (as it is a clone of my old website) so I'm not doing a first-time install of the plugin. I've registered the development site in my new subscription and have generated a new site key, but I can't find where to update the site key in WordPress. I'm receiving an alert saying "WPML plugin cannot connect to wpml.org". I've attached a screenshot showing the error communication details. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi there.

You should be able to UN-register from the old WPML key and RE-register with WPML new key by going to your site's backend > Plugins > Add new > Commercial.

In regards to the "WPML cannot connect" message, there's a big chance that what you are seeing is a false-positive that remained in the server caching and the notification will be removed automatically when the cache will automatically clear on its own.

To check if that's a false positive, go to Plugins > Add new > Commercial > click the "check for updates" button and if the page refreshes and WPML is still showing as registered, then yes, that is just a false positive.

Please let me know how that goes.

Kind regards,

Thanks for that. The message is still showing, but it all seems to be showing as registered after following your instructions so I guess it's a false positive as you say.
