Hello,
we no longer need a double language site and are planning top remove WPML.
I see that there are a couple of articles on how to properly proceed. I would like to receive a confirmation in paerticular regarding the best practices you suggested for SEO related stuff (missing permalink for removed language etc).
Thank you for your additional help.

Hi Cristiano,
before your ticket is assigned to one of my colleagues, please allow me to walk you through some initial debugging steps. This will help speed up the support process.
To avoid 404 links, the best practice would be to set a 301 redirect (to your default language. This is considered "Moved Permanently". And force a scan in Google Webmaster Console so the deleted language will be removed from the index.
Thank you, we managed to remove the plugin successfully.
best,
