This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem:
In some case the URL of the content looks like:
https://mysite.com/contact/ (original content)
https://mysite.com/es/?page_id=1288 (translation)
Why is that and how to avoid it?
Solution:
This is default WordPress behavior and not WPML related.
The URL parameter "?page_id=1288" means here that the content is still saved as a draft post.
WordPress will replace this parameter with the content's title once the content is getting published.
With WPML by default, this URL slug by default will use the title's translation.
A translation will not get published unless is completed to 100% inside the WPML Translation Editor.
In some cases, it might be that the case that original content still was saved as a Draft when you created the translations.
