Background of the issue:
We are working with an SEO team and currently having a problem with canonicals. We are instructed to 'translate independently' every page that we have on the website. We have 7 languages on the website and I think on the maintenance standpoint this is not ideal.
Symptoms:
Problem with canonicals on a multi-language website.
Questions:
Can you let me know if there is an optimal way of fixing the canonical issue without translating every page independently?
I understand what you're looking for. Please note that when you duplicate a post in other languages, a synchronization state is established between the duplicate and the original pages. This means that all the information related to SEO (including canonical URLs) and content on the translated page will be synchronized with the original language. As a result, the information on the translated page will appear the same as the original page until the duplicated page is translated independently.
This is not an issue, but rather the expected behavior when pages are synchronized. Everything within these pages will be synchronized, and it is not possible to exclude certain features from being synchronized.
If you want the canonical URL to be set correctly for each duplicate, it is required to independently translate the duplicate page, so that the information can get updated there automatically.
Alternatively, if you're using the Yoast SEO or Rankmath plugin, you can set the canonical URL for the duplicated page in other languages manually. Ensure you install the WPML SEO plugin as well if you choose this method so that the SEO information propagates properly to each translated page.
By following any of the ways mentioned above, you should be able to update the canonical URL for the duplicated pages/posts.
Let me know if the information above helps or if you need further assistance. I'll be happy to help.
Best Regards,
Prosenjit
