This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client was unsure if they needed to create separate sitemaps for each language when using Yoast SEO with WPML, especially when using a directory structure for languages (e.g., /es/ for Spanish).

Solution:
We informed the client that when using Yoast SEO with WPML, there is no need to create separate sitemaps for each language. Yoast SEO and WPML work together to handle multilingual sitemaps efficiently. We provided a link to documentation on how Yoast SEO works with WPML: https://wpml.org/documentation/plugins-compatibility/using-wordpress-seo-with-wpml/#translate-sitemaps
We also emphasized the importance of having the WPML addon plugin, WPML SEO, installed: https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/wpml-seo/

We clarified that for directory-based language setups, the sitemaps are automatically sorted with the WPML SEO plugin, and there will only be one sitemap index (e.g., https://what-to-do-in.co.uk/sitemap_index.xml). However, individual sitemaps like https://what-to-do-in.co.uk/post-sitemap.xml will show posts for each translation. We noted that separate sitemap_index.xml files are only generated for each language when using different domains per language.

If this solution is not relevant due to being outdated or not applicable to your case, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. Do I need to create separate sitemaps for each new language with Yoast? At present the translated pages are added to the existing Yoast page/post/event sitemaps.

Hi,

Thank you for contacting WPML Support, I will gladly help you.

When using Yoast SEO in conjunction with WPML, you don't need to create separate sitemaps for each language. Yoast SEO and WPML are designed to work together efficiently, and they handle multilingual sitemaps.

You can find more information on this link related to how Yoast SEO works with WPML:
https://wpml.org/documentation/plugins-compatibility/using-wordpress-seo-with-wpml/#translate-sitemaps

* Please note that you need to have installed the WPML addon plugin: WPML SEO (https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/wpml-seo/)

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Kind regards,
Marsel

The article refers to setups with sub domain as new language, I am using directory /es/ for example. Is this still automatically sorted with the WPML SEO plugin or do I need to do anything else?

The same logic applies for the setup that you have ( Different languages in directories).
Ex: yourwebsite.com/es/sitemap_index.xml

The sitemaps are automatically sorted with the WPML SEO plugin.

I do not have a sitemap @ what-to-do-in.co.uk/es/sitemap_index.xml - only what-to-do-in.co.uk/sitemap_index.xml, should I also have sitemaps in each language directory?

I do apologize, as my previous reply might not have been complete.

When using WPML SEO you'll have only: hidden link, but on that page when you open for example: hidden link you should be able to see the posts for each translation.

* Only when using different domains per language the sitemap_index.xml is generated for each language separately.

From what I've checked on your website, it seems that is configured correctly.

I hope you find this information helpful.
