This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client is experiencing issues translating Avada Fusion Elements into Chinese using WPML, encountering alerts about encoded fields. Additionally, there are concerns about the correct method to translate content and manage layouts across different languages.

Solution:
1. For translating menus, especially with advanced options like Avada's mega menu, it's recommended to translate the menus manually to ensure correct settings in each language. Alternatively, WPML > WP Menus Sync can be tested, but manual adjustments might still be necessary.
2. In the Avada Library, ensure that the admin language is set to English to view the original content settings. If using WPML > Translation Dashboard, set each content's specific translation method accordingly.
3. To switch to the WPML Translation Editor, access it via the right sidebar in the WordPress Editor while editing the original content. This allows for text-only translations, maintaining layout and design across languages.
4. If using the WordPress Editor for translations, ensure to set Avada Theme Options manually for each layout in each language. Use the 'Translate independently' option if duplicating content to prevent overwriting.
5. For issues like excerpt length, which might not be directly related to WPML but to Avada's handling of Chinese characters, consider testing on an Avada setup without WPML to confirm.

I switched to WPML Translation Editor and updated the Spanish translation without receiving any errors. I am not sure where exactly you are seeing an issue here?

Yes, you can also use the WordPress Editor to translate the layouts, but you need to make sure to set the Avada Theme Options for each layout manually in each language.

If the excerpt is too long on translated layouts, you might need to adjust the Avda Theme Option "Preview Width" on the translated layout or "Excerpt length" on the content block.

The advantage of using the WordPress Editor for translation is that you can use different content and theme settings per language.

If you duplicate content with WPML, specially templates or layouts, I suggest opening the translated template on the WordPress Editor in the top right on the sidebar to look for the section:

"This document is a duplicate of News Articles 2, and it is maintained by WPML."

Click there "Translate independently"; otherwise, the layout will get overwritten anytime you edit the original layout.

Now you should be able to save the changes for this layout independently.

About the excerpt length:

I doubt that this is a WPML issue.

On the backend, I see the expected length is set by word correctly. It is more likely that Avada has issues setting the excerpt length for Chinese characters, and this should be something that would be even replicable on an Avada test site running Chinese without WPML.

For example, according to Chat GPT, this here are 13 Chinese Words:
以下是英国作为此类项目理想目的地的原因

Maybe Avada's Word count mechanism thinks the character combination without blank spaces is one word, but this actually translates to:
“Here are the reasons why the UK is an ideal destination for such programs.”

If you still think that this might be a WPML issue, I can offer to set up a test site with Avada and try to replicate this issue without WPML.

I assume you were doing this on staging3? This wasn't clear from your reply, but would have helped knowing. I think you were at staging3 though, having compared staging3 with staging2 revision dates for the Spanish 'News Articles2' post card.

Spanish was already translated. I haven't been trying to translate to Spanish. I've been trying to translate to SC & TC (Chinese).

How do you 'switch to the WPML Translation Editor'? - can you provide me a series of steps between screens and actions taken as I need to know where you are navigating.

The issue I am seeing was covered in a screencast 18 days ago: See hidden link

I then provided some further detail the following day at hidden link

I then demonstrated what i thought i should maybe doing at hidden link

I then tried the latter at staging3, which involved duplicating first.

Just to confirm I don not want to use different content or layouts between languages. All pages/post/portfolios should use the same layout and content, but simply be translated accordingly. So now I feel I shouldn't do the duplicate content method for Chinese 'News Articles2' post card when I do this on staging2. Do you agree?

So i've just recorded a further screencast today showing you how I am trying to go about things at my end. Hopefully you will spot that I'm doing something wrong in my workflow, and be able to guideme accordingly. This latest screencast is at: hidden link

Maybe you can record video of how to do the SC & TC translations for 'News Articles2' post card at staging3? If you need to delete the SC &TC duplicates before you do this, please go ahead as this sounds like it was an incorrect/unnecessary procedure.

I'll revert to Avada about the excerpt charachter count. Your explanation makes sense. I might just delete that element!

Yes, on this ticket, I only received access to staging3.

The translation method is set inside the right sidebar of the WordPress Editor while editing the original post or page.

There you can choose:
- Translation Dashboard
- WPML Translation Editor
- WordPress Editor

Please set the translation method to "Translation Dashboard" if you plan to send the content for translation using this method.

If this will not solve the issue with translating these templates, please let me know.

OK. Thanks for clarifying how i switch to 'WPML Translation Editor'

But when do I do this?

On staging 3, viewing the English version of 'News Articles 1' in the English admin of WordPress, the SC & TC Translations don't exist yet.

So part of my need for understanding is, whilst there, do I use the 'Add' + feature or the duplicate feature whilst viewing the Word Press editor state (see hidden link), or do I first switch to the WPML Translation Editor, in which case I see this hidden link and then hit the 'Add' + feature? The latter move takes me to this hidden link

And if I then 'save and complete' i get to this screen and the spinner under Simplified Chinese/Translate keeps spinning (hidden link)

I then hit update on the screen and I see this hidden link

So i then hit the 'update icon for spanish, which keeps spinning (with tooltip 'Spanish translation assigned to local translator'). So what now?

Should I go to the 'Translation dashboard' which is now showing hidden link and do something there?

If i now switch back to the 'News Articles 1' Avada Fusion element in the SC admin, I can now see the correct layout and it appears to be translated. So this is progress. It looks like hidden link and the preview seems OK. See hidden link (although the excerpt is missing).

But when I visit the front-end SC version of hidden link where 'News Article 2' displays, the button is still displaying in English.

Is there a final step I need to take and where do I do this?

At the moment, the translation method in your example is set to "WordPress Editor".

If you want to use this method, you have two options:

- Duplicate the content first, then open the translation by clicking the translation icon. The WordPress Editor will open in the second language. Now, click "Translate independently" on the top right inside the sidebar and edit your translation.

or

- Do not duplicate. Click the translation icon and on the translated content, inside the right sidebar of the WordPress Editor, use the option to copy the original content. This way, the original content will be copied inside the WordPress Editor, and you can create your translation.

Now, this method is usually only recommended if you plan to use different layouts or designs in different languages.

Another way to translate the content would be by switching the translation method to "WPML Translation Editor". Now, if you click the translation icon, the translation editor will open, and you will translate only the text content. Behind the scenes, WPML will copy over any relevant settings. This is ideal if you plan to use the same layout and design in all languages.

If you encounter any issues with incomplete translations after using the WPML Translation Editor, we are here to help and resolve them for you.

IMPORTANT:
You can not use both methods at the same time. The WPML Translation Editor can not recognize changes that are made on the WordPress Editor in a second language and will overwrite such changes.
