This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
You are running a multilingual WordPress site using WPML with languages configured in directories and SlimSEO for SEO needs. You encounter a critical SEO problem where, with WPML active, your setup generates three separate, root-level sitemaps for each language instead of a single comprehensive sitemap index. Additionally, the hreflang annotations for the homepage in all languages are incorrect within these duplicated sitemaps.
Solution:
We recommend disabling the WPML SEO addon if you are using SlimSEO, as WPML SEO is primarily designed to work with Yoast SEO and RankMath SEO. You can find more information here: WPML SEO documentation. Since SlimSEO handles the sitemap generation when integrated with WPML, we suggest consulting the SlimSEO support team for further assistance on this issue. Their documentation can be found here: SlimSEO and WPML integration.

Please note that this solution might be irrelevant if it's outdated or not applicable to your case. We highly recommend checking related known issues at https://wpml.org/known-issues/, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If the issue persists, please open a new support ticket for further assistance.

Background of the issue:
I'm running a multilingual WordPress site using WPML with languages configured in directories (e.g., bws-windows.com/, bws-windows.com/en/, bws-windows.com/de/) and SlimSEO for our SEO needs. We also have the WPML SEO module installed and active. I'm encountering a critical SEO problem related to sitemap generation and hreflang implementation.

Symptoms:
When WPML is active, instead of generating a single, comprehensive sitemap index (sitemap.xml) that includes all languages, the setup currently generates three separate, root-level sitemaps for each language. Additionally, the hreflang annotations for the homepage in all languages are incorrect within the duplicated sitemaps.

Questions:
How can I configure WPML and SlimSEO to generate a single sitemap index containing URLs for all languages?
Why are the hreflang annotations incorrect for the homepage in the duplicated sitemaps?

Hello,

Our addon WPML SEO is designed for the following SEO plugins:

- Yoast SEO
- RankMath SEO

Source: https://wpml.org/documentation/related-projects/wpml-seo/

- Does the issue disappear if you disable WPML SEO? If yes, please leave it disabled, as it has no functionality for SlimSEO.

When it comes to SlimSEO, it is the same author who manages the integration for WPML:

This means, the way the sitemaps are generated is handled by SlimSEO.

I suggest you consult their support team about the issue.

Best regards
Andreas
