This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client has a license for a website and set up a staging site using a different domain. They encountered issues updating WPML Multilingual CMS and Advanced Custom Fields Multilingual due to the domain change.
Solution:
If you're experiencing this issue, we recommend using a separate license for your staging site. You can generate a new WPML key by visiting your WPML account, then unregister the old key if necessary, and register with the new key under Plugins > Add New > Commercial.

For updating the plugins manually, follow these steps:

  • Create a full website backup.
  • Download the latest version of WPML and any other WPML add-ons from WPML Downloads.
  • Disable and delete the current WPML Multilingual CMS plugin (note: settings and translations are saved in the database and will not be deleted).
  • Upload and activate the freshly downloaded WPML plugin from Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin → Activate WPML.

Repeat the process for the Advanced Custom Fields Multilingual plugin as well.

If this solution does not resolve your issue or seems outdated, we highly recommend checking related known issues at WPML Known Issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins. If further assistance is needed, please open a new support ticket at WPML Support Forum.

Background of the issue:
I have a license for a website ecotravel-portugal.com and have set up a staging site on the subdomain staging.ecotravel-portugal.com using cPanel Softaculous. I updated several plugins successfully, but WPML Multilingual CMS and Advanced Custom Fields Multilingual were not upgraded.

Symptoms:
I received a warning regarding the domain change, and the plugins WPML Multilingual CMS and Advanced Custom Fields Multilingual were not upgraded.

Questions:
Can I use the same license on staging sites?
Why were WPML Multilingual CMS and Advanced Custom Fields Multilingual not upgraded?

Hi there.

Because a staging site is using a different domain, you will need to use a different license (WPML Key).

You can go here (http://wpml.org/account/sites/) > generate a new key for the staging domain > copy it > then go to your site > Plugins > Add new > Commercial > UNregister WPML from the old key (if needed) and click Register and add the new WPML key.

You can also try to also update manually by following the steps below:

  • create a full website backup
  • download the latest version of WPML (and other WPML add-ons that you use) from https://wpml.org/account/downloads/;
  • disable WPML Multilingual CMS
  • delete WPML Multilingual CMS (the settings and the translations are saved in the database so they will not be deleted);
  • upload the freshly downloaded WPML plugin from Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin
    → Activate WPML
    ;

Then, you can follow the same process for updating the other plugin, too.

Please let me know how things go.
