Background of the issue:
I am experiencing a very large table on the database of the ynno.com website. The table inl_string_pages contains almost 4 million records and is significantly larger compared to other tables.

Symptoms:
The database size has grown significantly, from 250mb last year to over 500mb now, with the inl_string_pages table alone nearing 300mb.

Questions:
Why is the inl_string_pages table growing so large?
Is there any way to clean this table and mitigate the issue?

Hi,

The way you added the debug information is not helpful. I can't read it like this. Please see the special section here below to add the debug information. Please see the attached screenshot.

If you need further help with this, please share the access details to your site with me.

Hi,

There is one thing I observed that you can already try. It seems that WPML, Strings Translation, and maybe other plugins from us have not been updated to their latest versions on your site. Please update our plugins. If WordPress itself is not updated to its latest version, also update WordPress. Then, check if the problem pesists.

**** Important! Please make a full site backup (files and DB) before you proceed with those steps****

Regards,
Itamar.

Hi Itamar,

Thanks for your reply. It is unclear for me how to share the debug information then, as I do not have the option to share this information at all. Tried in both Chrome and Firefox (both running under Ubuntu) and did not see the text field as mentioned in your image. I attached the screenshot so you can see what I see. Maybe I'm missing something here...

I will try updating WordPress and the plugin today, will let you know how that went. If I still run into trouble I will let you know.

Regards,
Duco

Hi, Duco.

I'm consulting our system team about the problem you experienced with sharing the debug information.

Please update our plugins to their latest versions and check if the problem persists.

**** Important! Please make a full site backup (files and DB) before you proceed with those steps****

Please note that in the latest versions of WPML, the add-on Translation Management is included in the WPML Multilingual CMS, our core plugin, and there is no need for it to be active separately.

You decided not to share access to your site. I am not enabling a private message for the next reply. Please let us know if you need further help with this problem.

Regards,
Itamar.

Hi Itamar,

Both WordPress and the WPML plugins are up to date; the problem is still there. The table is still huge (see the attached image).

If I understand correctly what you're saying; the "WPML String Translation" can be disabled as it is currently part of the "WPML Multilingual CMS" plugin?

I have not shared any user data for you to go to the website. We still need assistance though. Can you enable another private message so I can fill in the data? I'm relatively new to WPML (this is a website that we did not originally built) and I do not know the consequences of cleaning the "wpecs_icl_string_pages" table.

Regards,
Duco

Hi, Duco, and thanks for trying my suggestions.

You asked:

No, I was referring to the Translation Management add-on. With the latest versions of WPML, you can deactivate it.

You also wrote:

We have extensive documentation about using WPML. Please make use of it. The best place to start is our getting started guide.

https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/

Since you inherited this site, would you know if it could it be that WPML was not updated for a long time on this site?

1. Take a backup of the DB of your site.

2. Go to WPML -> Support -> Troubleshooting (link)

3. Once on the troubleshooting screen, scroll down, press the following button, and check if it helps.

- 'Cleanup and optimize string tables'

- 'Clear invalid strings'

*** Please backup your database before using this.***

If it does not help, please let me have access to your site, including FTP access. Please also allow me to install the Adminer script (hidden link) so I can onspect the DB of your site. And if needed please allow me to install a plugin like DUplicator or All IN One Migration to take a copy of your and esclate it to our second-tier supporters.

Thanks,
Itamar.

Hi Itamar,

Thanks for your reaction again. Regarding the buttons 'Cleanup and optimize string tables' and 'Clear invalid strings'; I do not see them on the troubleshooting page.

I do not know the last time the plugins were updated. In theory, we do a patch round every month, with important patches being installed immediately.

But after pressing the "Clear the cache in WPML", the number of records in the "wpecs_icl_string_pages" table went from more than 3 million to an acceptable 16,419. I remember pressing the button before, but maybe my memory is failing me... haha.

Thanks for your help. For now, it seems to be OK.

Regards,
Duco
