This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.

Problem:
The client wants to display bilingual captions for images attached to posts or pages, with the original language being Japanese and the translated language English. They are using the Justified Image Grid plugin.

Solution:
We recommend translating image captions through the Advanced Translation Editor (ATE) while translating the post or page where the image is embedded. If you prefer to translate captions in advance, you can manually translate the image caption directly. Please watch this video for guidance: http://tinyurl.com/2c2nensa

If you encounter issues when trying to translate in the Media Library, ensure it is set to Grid view, not List view. If you still see the image upload field after changing the language, follow these steps:
1. Go to "WPML > Settings > Post Type Translation" and set the Media post type's Translation preference to "Translatable - only show translated items."
2. In "WPML > Settings > Media Translation," select the appropriate options and click the "Apply" button.
3. Edit the default image in the Editor, make a small change to its caption, and update the image. This should copy the image across different languages.
4. Switch the language to verify if the default image is correctly displayed. If it is, update the caption and save the changes.

Please tell me how to translate captions attached to images.

I want to display captions for photos attached to posts or pages, but instead of translating the captions every time with WPML, I want the captions themselves to have two versions: the original (Japanese) and the translated (English).

By the way, the main purpose is to use a plugin called Justified Image Grid to generate the content.

Thanks for your support.
However, in my environment, the video does not behave the same way.

Around the 12-second of your video, it appears as though you're clicking on some text link (the screen is blurry, and the text is illegible),
but I don't see any corresponding link on my screen.
Could that be the reason?

I've uploaded a capture to Dropbox. Could you please take a look?

When selecting the language switch menu at the top of the media display screen, it switches to a screen for uploading new media.

I'm sorry for the video's unclear resolution. However, the method you've used to translate the caption is precisely what I outlined in the video from my previous message. However, if you're seeing an image upload field rather than the actual image, it could indicate that the image has not yet been translated into other languages. Please try the following steps to translate the images.

- Please go to "WPML > Settings" and scroll down to the `Media Translation` section
- Select the options marked in this screenshot: hidden link
- Click on the 'Start' button

After completing the process, follow the steps provided in the video to translate the captions.

Please let me know if the steps above help in solving the issue or if you need further assistance in this matter. I will be happy to help.

I see.
I need to "COPY" the image for translation?

Does this "copy" mean that the image will be physically duplicated?
Or is it something that is managed on some database (information, not images)?

I'm not sure if this is a "copy" of the images, because my site currently contains about 3GB of images and I would not be very happy to double the size of that.

I just checked "Media Translation", the latest images are registered.

Until last week, only image files up to 2018 were registered.
I was wondering why there were no newer images.

Does this have anything to do with starting "COPY" as you have advised?

However, there is no change when I try to edit, from "media", in the way you taught me the other day.
Also, the text link that I asked about and you did not indicate what it was is not showing up either!

Regarding your concern, the "copy" action in this context does not involve creating physical duplicates of your images, which would indeed significantly increase your site's storage requirements. Instead, this process creates a separate ID in the database for each language version of an image. These entries reference back to the original image file, so there's no additional storage consumed by duplicate image files. This approach allows images to be associated with different language versions of your site without the need to upload new images for each language, thereby keeping your site's overall size manageable.

The latest images that are now showing in the "Media Translation" section might have happened due to the duplication, which has allowed these images to be registered and displayed. Just so you know, if you want, you can translate the caption of the images from the media Translation section as well.

Are you indicating that, despite duplicating the images, you're unable to translate them via the Media section? If that's the case, please include the WPML Debug Information in your next response so that I can check the configuration made in WPML settings. Please check the guide below to understand how you can get the Debug information.

Before providing the debug information, I want to mention about the "text link" you referred to.

This is what I wrote in the first reply:

It refers to the text that was clicked before changing the language.
These texts don't appear in my environment.

Thank you for the clarification and for sharing the debug info.

When the media section is set to Grid view(Screenshot: hidden link), clicking on an image should display the "Edit more details" link(Screenshot: hidden link). The Media Library on your site may be currently in List view, which is why clicking on an image takes you directly to the image edit page.

However, if you're still seeing the image upload field on changing the language, please try the following:

- Navigate to "WPML > Settings > Post Type Translation" and adjust the Media post type's Translation preference to "Translatable - only show translated items."
- In "WPML > Settings > Media Translation," make sure to select these options(hidden link) and then click the "Apply" button.
- Afterward, edit the default image in the Editor make a small change to its caption, and update the image
- This action should copy the image across different languages. Subsequently, switch the language to verify if the default image is correctly displayed. If it appears as expected, proceed to update the caption and save the changes.

I was able to replicate the same scenario by adding a new language on my site, and by taking the steps above, I was successfully been able to translate the caption. Please let me know how it goes. I will be happy to help if you need further assistance in this matter.

I was able to switch languages successfully from the opened image.

However, when I switch languages, I get the following warning.

1)What setting does this refer to?

2)What is the difference between "Edit anyway" and "Open in Translation Editor"?If it is set to "use WPML Translation Editor," these two seem to refer to the same thing.

The warning message you're encountering refers to a setting within WPML that determines how translations are managed and edited on your site. WPML offers two primary modes for editing translations: the standard WordPress editor and the WPML Translation Editor. The warning indicates that your site is configured to use the WPML Translation Editor for managing translations, but you are currently attempting to edit a translation using the standard WordPress editor.

Since you've duplicated media files from WPML > Setting, WPML considers it as a form of translation. Now, when you're trying to switch languages from the editor, WPML sees this action as an attempt to manually update the translation, and display the message.

In the case of Media Images, you can click on "Edit anyway" or "Open in Translation Editor" as both ultimately allow you to edit translations.
