[Resolved] When I activate WPML Strings Translation the front end of my website goes blank.
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client was experiencing a conflict when enabling WPML String Translation and Elementor Pro simultaneously, leading to a 500 error on their website. Solution: We recommended the following steps: 1. Verify that the server meets all WPML minimum requirements. 2. Consult our FAQ on 500 errors for potential solutions. 3. Enable WordPress debug to identify the specific error by following our debugging guide. 4. Perform a compatibility check by: - Creating a full website backup. - Disabling all plugins except for WPML and its add-ons. - Switching to a default WordPress theme like TwentySeventeen. - Reactivating plugins one by one to identify the conflicting plugin. 5. If the issue persists, it may be related to server/hosting settings, particularly the 'allowed memory size exhausted' error. We provided a custom search URL to explore existing tickets with similar issues and solutions. 6. We also suggested updating to the WPML 4.6.10 beta version after creating a full website backup and removing the current WPML version.
If these steps do not resolve the issue or if the solution is outdated or not applicable, we recommend opening a new support ticket. We also advise checking related known issues, verifying the version of the permanent fix, and confirming that you have installed the latest versions of themes and plugins.
Before this ticket gets assigned to my colleagues, I will try to help.
1. Usually, the 500 errors (Internal Server Errors) or white blank page errors are related to the server configuration or server limitations being reached.
4. This issue might also be caused by incompatibility or not 100% compatibility between WPML and (at least) one of the active plugins or the active theme.
Can you please try to see if this issue happens even when only the WPML plugins are active and you are using a default WordPress theme?
Please try the following steps so that we would test for a compatibility-related issue:
- create a full website backup
- disable all plugins except WPML and its add-ons
- check if the issue is happening again
- if it's not, reactivate your plugins one by one, checking every time if the issue shows up again so that you can understand which plugin is causing that issue
If the issue happens even with the non-WPML plugins disabled:
- leave all the non-WPML plugins deactivated
- switch to a default theme like TwentySeventeen
- try to recreate the issue now
If you have the chance, it would be best to do this in a staging (testing) environment.
I hope that you will find this information helpful.
Thanks Mihai! I have gone through all your suggested steps and it seems that enabling WPML Strings Translation and Elementor Pro at the same time seems to be causing the issue.
What can I do next? Obviously I need Elementor Pro for the website structure and it seems really odd that such a well-known plugin would cause a conflict.
This has become exceptionally urgent has my guesthouse is losing bookings because we have issues on some of the pages. How soon will I get actual tech support?
1. Yes, I recommended for us to enable the WordPress debug log so that we can understand what is happening and what is the exact error that is causing this.
Paste the content of the debug log on a site like pastebin.com and then share the link here with us (only you and us will see the URL you are sharing).
You can create a full website backup, remove WPML (disable the plugin + delete the plugin), then go to Plugins > Add new > Upload > upload the zip file and install it.
I don't know what issue is happening on the site right now until I don't see a debug log (I am not aware of any existing issue between Elementor and the "String Translation" add-on) but you can try to update WPML to the latest beta version and see if the issue is fixed.
The "allowed memory exhausted" error (which is the fatal error that's causing this issue) is usually related to server/hosting settings so they (the hosting support) might be the only ones who can fix it.
However, there are a good amount of existing tickets related to this exact error with recommendations and solutions from our team.
I created this custom search URL below - can you please take a look at the tickets showing up and see if the solution that worked for the customers works for you, too?
You can create a full website backup, remove WPML (disable the plugin + delete the plugin), then go to Plugins > Add new > Upload > upload the zip file and install it.
Please let me know how that goes and if anything changes or if the recommendations from my colleagues helped you get this fixed.
I will be waiting for your update.
Mihai
