This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem:
If you're experiencing a White Screen of Death (WSOD) and suspect it might be due to a conflict with the WPML plugin, there are steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.
Solution:
First, try to isolate the problem by deactivating all other plugins except for WPML and its related plugins, and switch to a default theme. This can help determine if there is a conflict causing the WSOD.
Second, as a temporary measure, increase your
WP_MEMORY_LIMIT
to 1024M. This increase in memory limit might resolve the WSOD temporarily while a permanent solution is being sought.
If these steps do not resolve your issue, or if they are not applicable to your situation, we recommend checking the related known issues and ensuring that you have the latest versions of themes and plugins installed. If the problem persists, please do not hesitate to open a new support ticket with us.
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Thank you for your patience. I downloaded and installed the copy you sent, activated all WPML Plugins, made several tests and didn't get to any issues. This indicates that your issue is server related.
Is there a specific way I could reproduce this issue? As I said, just by having WPML activated and navigating through the website, I didn't get any white screen.
Please reach out to your hosting provider and explain that the issue is happening in your specific environment. Furthermore, please downgrade your PHP version to 8.0. Please let me know how it goes.
Thank you for your response, Lucas.
The issue with the whiteout is that it occurs unpredictably without any specific pattern. Could you explain how you concluded that the problem lies with the server? Could you provide further information on the tests you conducted?
Could you explain how you concluded that the problem lies with the server?
It's an indication, we can't say with 100% certainty that the issue lies with the server. But since the only difference between my local website and the live one is the server, there's a high chance it is server-related. That's why it's good to check that.
Could you provide further information on the tests you conducted?
I simply activated WPML and related plugins and surfed through your website in different browsers (Safari and Chrome). I visited all the pages from your Menu in English, French, and Portuguese, and didn't get to any errors.
Please reach out to your hosting support, to check if they have any server related error logs they can share, or please provide a copy of your website (maybe a staging one), where I can see the error reproduced. Unfortunately, without a reproduction of the website, it's trial and error until we find what's causing the issue.
I'll provide you with the list of required plugins that need to be activated to replicate the issue:
- Akismet Anti-spam: Spam Protection
- Elementor
- Elementor Pro
- Gutenberg
- Jetpack
- WPML Multilingual CMS
- WPML String Translation
Could you please run the tests again, ensuring that these plugins are activated?
These plugins were already activated in my initial tests. I ran the tests again, same context: different browsers, different languages, all the menu pages. I didn't get to any errors.
To get to a solution, I kindly ask you to do one of the following:
1. Reach out to your hosting provider, to see if they have any relevant error logs or information that can help us get to a solution. Please explain to them that the error is only happening in your environment.
2. Create a staging (test) website, where the error is reproduced. This way, I can analyze the problem and check what's going or even talk to our developers and show them the problem, so we can get to a solution.
As I said, unfortunately, without checking the problem hands-on, it's very difficult to know what can be causing the issue and what the solution can be. It's very likely that this issue is server-related, since it's happening in your specific environment.
Yes, we are currently contacting our hosting provider. However, their response time is quite slow so it might take some time before we get a reply from them.
As for the second step, we have tried that but the error is not reproducible on staging.
Here are some more information about the white screen issue:
- It only happens intermittently
- It only happens on default language (english). Any other language works fine.
- When the white screen happens, clearing the cache will solve the issue, but only temporarily.
- When the issue occurs, the page will take a longer amount of time to load.
I am hoping that these information might be useful to you. Please let me know.
Since we have to wait for a more detailed feedback from the hosting team, there are a few things we can check meanwhile:
1. This issue might arise from a conflict between WPML and other plugins/themes. If possible, leave only WPML and related plugins active, change to a default theme and see if the issue is still happening. I know it can be cumbersome to do that, but it would be great if we could check this possibility.
2. As a workaround, please increase your WP_MEMORY_LIMIT to 1024M. This way, there's the possibility of temporarily solving the issue, while we look for a permanent solution.
Lucas, we're reaching out to the WordPress team to figure out the most practical solution for our situation and resolve the issue. I'll pass along their latest feedback in case you have any input. (Refer the screenshot.)
Additionally, are you still using the duplicator package access, or should we revoke it? Please let us know.
Downgrading can be a practical option. Please note, that you might encounter "Deprecated" warnings if you do that. They're only warning sand should not affect the functioning of the website.
