Hi,
We received a reply from Yoast SEO that WPML does not work with Yoast Redirects. Despite being in contact with WPML support regarding a lot of issues regarding this we have not been told this before. Yoast SEO is one of the most important plugin for WordPress.
Here is the Yoast support reply:
"A standard WordPress site supports a single language for all content. WPML changes this, manipulates the rewrite rules, and Yoast SEO Premium redirect expects the site to have a single URL starting point. WPML isn't compatible with Yoast redirects - https://wpml.org/plugin-functionality/redirect/.
There's already an open issue for our developers to look at allowing relative URLs for redirect origins, but we cannot give you an estimate of when they'll start working on your report.
Please let us know if you have further questions; we are happy to help."
Thank you for your message, I understand your concern. There seems to be a bit of miscommunication here.
WPML is compatible with Yoast SEO and works correctly for the vast majority of its features. This is why it is listed as a compatible plugin on our site.
However, regarding Yoast SEO Premium Redirects, there is a known limitation/issue due to how redirects are handled together with WPML’s multilingual URL structure. This is not a general incompatibility, but rather a specific bug.
As with many complex integrations, bugs like this can occur, and both teams are aware of it. We are actively working towards improvements and better alignment.
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. The problem is the redirect does not work at all for translated languages which means the workaround do not work. Also, I was in contact with WPML support for a long time yesterday, and was about to set up staging website, to try to solve the problem to later realize through Yoast Support that redirects do not work for WPML Multilingual. This could have been avoided if the information was available. We have now decided to proceed without redirections but our SEO got a major hit because of this with redirects leading to default language instead of translated languages.
Thank you for your feedback, and I completely understand your frustration.
I just created test site and tested, redirects between languages are working correctly in a WPML setup. I also tested this on a clean environment and was not able to reproduce the issue.
At the moment, we don’t have any widespread reports or confirmed incompatibility indicating that redirects categorically do not work with WPML. This suggests that either there may have been a misunderstanding in the communication, or there is a configuration or setup-specific issue affecting your site.

I would be happy to help investigate this further. If possible, we can:
Review the issue on our test site (hidden link), or you can share access and steps to reproduce the problem
Looking forward to your reply.
Kind regards,
Dražen
