Background of the issue:
I pushed a newer copy of production to staging, which is hosted on wpengine.com. My settings show that this staging site is linked. The issue can be seen at: hidden link.
Symptoms:
I see the following message in my dashboard: 'WPML plugin cannot connect to wpml.org. WPML needs to connect to its server to check for new releases and security updates. Something in the network or security settings is preventing this. Please allow outgoing communication to wpml.org to remove this notice.' Additionally, I got a communication error details report: 'wpml: Unable to register: Site key not matching.'
Questions:
How can I reconnect the staging site to WPML?
What might be causing the site key not to match after pushing a new copy to staging?
Thank you for reaching out to WPML support. I’d be glad to assist you with this issue.
Since the site has been migrated to a new domain, the existing site key will no longer be valid. You can generate a new site key for the staging site, which should resolve the issue without any problems.
Here’s how you can do it:
1. Navigate to **Plugins → Add New Plugin**.
2. Select the **Commercial** tab.
3. Click on **Unregister WPML**.
4. Then, click on **Register WPML**.
5. An input box will appear where you can enter the site key. Below the input box, you’ll find a link to create a new site key for the domain.
Please note that site keys are primarily used for updates and credit management, so creating a new one won’t affect your translations.
Let me know if this resolves your issue!
Thank you.
