Background of the issue:
I am trying to manage translations for my main page on my site hidden link using WPML. I recently made minor changes to the content, such as deleting a word and changing two or three words, and added one word in another instance.

Symptoms:
WPML used 135 credits for a minor translation change and 9 credits for adding one word.

Questions:
Why does WPML use so many credits for minor changes?
Can I get a refund of 130 credits for the first translation and 8 credits for the second?

Hello,

On the website, the following credits were used shortly before you opened this ticket:

9 used credit on hidden link
Translation Engine Microsoft
Language de_en
Date 2025-08-06 19:34:44 UTC

136 used credit on hidden link
Translation Engine: Microsoft
Language: de_en
Date: 2025-08-04 05:39:25 UTC

I have refunded those credits now, but please take note that this is an exception, as we usually only refund credits if a bug in WPML would have caused an issue.

It looks like on the 4th and 6th of August, original content on the homepage was changed, and this triggered a retranslation for some segments.

The Advanced Translation Editor, which runs the automatic translation, does use segmentation, which means that if you change one word in the original content, the whole affected segment will be translated. Usually, those segments are small, but they may include at least 1-20 words, sometimes more.

The Advanced Translation Editor looks like this:
https://wpml.org/documentation/translating-your-contents/advanced-translation-editor/

Further, take note that the cost for around 150 credits using Microsoft is only around 0,10 €.

---

It is expected that translations will get updated once you make changes to the original content.

If you want more control over your automatic translations, then please go to WPML > Translation Dashboard and disable "Translate Everything Automatically".

Also, on WPML > Settings > AI, inside the section "Do you want WPML to automatically translate all content when the Translation Editor opens?" I suggest you select "No, wait for me to start the translation".

Best regards
Andreas
