Background of the issue:
I am trying to manage two multisites, hidden link and hidden link, under a single WordPress installation with WPML configured to use the 'Different languages in directories' URL format. I want a single sitemap that includes pages in both languages, similar to what we have on our other websites.

Symptoms:
Each language has its own separate sitemap instead of a single combined sitemap. The sitemaps are: hidden link, hidden link, hidden link, and hidden link.

Questions:
Is it possible to have a single sitemap that includes pages in both languages?

Hi,

Welcome to WPML support. I will ask about the multi-site directory mode sitemap generation method and get back to you if the separate language is expected on that scenario or not.

Thanks.

Hi, just to make sure I communicate properly, I am still waiting for confirmation that having a separate sitemap XML in Muklti-site setuop even in directory mode is expected.

I will get back to you as soon as I have an answer.

Thanks.

Hi,

Thank you for your patience. There are a few questions that needs to be checked with you before being able to have an answer:

1) The hidden link link does not show at all and goes to 404 page.

Is this happening if you go to WPML > Languages and deactivate the "Use directory for default language" option and save and regenerate the sitemap and see if it works ok?

2) Would you please update all WPML plugin to the latest version:

- IMPORTANT STEP! Create a backup of your website. Or better approach will be to test this on a copy/staging version of the website to avoid any disruption of a live website.
- Go to "WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Add new > Commercial (tab)".
- Click the "Check for Updates" button.
- Update WPML and its addons there.

For more information:
https://wpml.org/faq/install-wpml/#automated-updates

3) Please regenerate the sitemap by clearing the sitemap cache. You can use this plugin for that:

https://wordpress.org/plugins/yoast-test-helper/

We are unsure how Yoast considers the subfolders as a separate site and subscription or not, the best way is to ask their support, but beforehand lets see what will be the result of the steps mentioned above.

Thanks

Please understand I do not need multiple sitemaps for different languages. I need a single sitemap hidden link that is currently showing but it do not have /ar/ pages in the sitemap.

Hi,

Thank you for the answer. Yes I understand that but it is up to Yoast plugin if it considers the URL as a separate domain in multi-site setup or not.

I wonder if you followed the steps I mentioned to make sure you have the updated version of WPML plugins including all the WPML addons?

Also I wonder did you follow the steps to clear sitemap cache?

Finally the link you shared contains the sitemaps that as you mentioned does not have Arabic version. But I wonder if there is a working sitemap with only Arabic version? Even if you do not want it I want to know if that is available? The reason I ask is that I checked the link you provided and the AR version sitemap goes to 404:

hidden link

That will help me to understand what to look for next.

Thanks

I have tried your suggestion to make the default language as directory but then en sitemap have /en/ in the index and then it have only /en/ pages but no ar.

I have not tried with updating all the plugins but will do.

Yes, /ar/ sitemap is present and having all the /ar/ pages but we have restricted it from showing publicly as we do not need that to be indexed.

Got it thank you. So please get back to us with the result of the updated WPML plugins and also I appreciate it if you can contact Yoast regarding this and ask if Yoast considered this multi-site setup a separate domain that it generated two sitemaps instead of the one or not.

Thanks.
