[Escalated to WPML Developers team] WPML link translations are not stored for re-use
This is the technical support forum for WPML - the multilingual WordPress plugin.
Everyone can read, but only WPML clients can post here. WPML team is replying on the forum 6 days per week, 22 hours per day.
Our wait time is higher than usual, please make sure you are meeting the minimum requirement - https://wpml.org/home/minimum-requirements before you report issues, and if you can take a look at current Known Issues - https://wpml.org/known-issues/. Thank you.
I found that if you translate a link, WPML only remembers the translation for that single post. If you need to translate the link on a different post, you need to type it again.
In my case, I have this issue not only for external (affiliate) links but also for internal links. Should this work for internal links or does that indeed fail as well?
To be honest, I consider this a bug. I can't think of a good reason why WPML would remember all translations, except URLs. When it comes to internal URLs, WPML should be able to come up with the translation automatically if the target post was translated already.
But, for external links, this should work too. It's very time-consuming and error-prone to keep typing those links again and again.
Please let me know either a good workaround or a timeline for when this will be fixed.
Welcome to the WPML support forum. I will do my best to help you to resolve the issue.
As of now, this is a feature request and we don't have an exact time frame for this. We will get back to you soon when we have feedback from our developers on this. Please wait.
Thank you Bigul. Meanwhile, I found that it's even worse: I have a page where I had already translated all the internal links. Later, I changed one link in the default language. When I opened the Advanced Translation Editor to adjust that single link, all internal links were gone and I had to re-enter all of them.
It's impossible to work with. Please try to make a quick fix for this.
Thank you, kind regards,
Arno

Thank you for the updates. This looks like a different issue. Please note, I have opened a new ticket for the All internal links translations were gone bug.
Because as per our support policies, we can only handle one issue per ticket. It will help us to serve you better and we can avoid discussing multiple problems in one ticket. I will get back to you soon on the latest ticket. Please wait. Thank you for your understanding.
Any update on this? I know it's classified as a "feature request" but I personally consider it a bug as it's a core functionality of the translation editor to remember translations.
Will it take weeks to fix this? Months? We're currently wasting a lot of time entering link translations over and over again.
This fix for this bug is not included in the latest version of WPML. As we updated before, it is a time taking task and as of now, we don't have eta for it. Thank you for your kind understanding.
