[Resolved] Not part of category when activating or turning off the plugin
This thread is resolved. Here is a description of the problem and solution.
Problem: The client is experiencing an issue with the WPML plugin where a category named 'Nieuws' is being displayed as 'not part of any category' when the plugin is activated. This issue is causing an extra category to be added in the backend. When the plugin is deactivated, the 'Nieuws' category is removed from the menu structure but reappears when the plugin is reactivated.
Solution: We asked the client to confirm if the issue does not occur when WPML is deactivated and to provide the location on the website where the 'Nieuws' section is shown as 'not part of any category'. We also requested debug information from the client's site using this link: http://wpml.org/faq/provide-debug-information-faster-support/
Upon receiving further details, we identified that the default WordPress category term 'Uncategorized' (term ID 1) was appearing in Dutch as 'Geen onderdeel van een categorie' under the English version of the site and was translated into 'Nieuws' in Dutch. We advised the client to activate WPML and rename the default 'Uncategorized' (Geen onderdeel van een categorie) to 'News' in the appropriate language.

We are currently translating a website using the WPML plugin. The client has changed one of the main archives of WP to 'Nieuws'. The main language of the page is in Dutch. When we turned on the plugin the categorie was shown as 'not part of any category' and it appears to have added an extra category in the backend, changing 'nieuws' to 'not part of any category'. Now, we created a duplicate of the site to check this issue, the 'nieuws' category was changed and has been added back to the menu-structure. However, now when we turn off the plugin it removes the category, but puts it back when we turn it back on.
Just to confirm, am I understanding correctly that the issue is not occurring when WPML is deactivated? Can you please indicate where you are observing that the 'Nieuws' section is 'not part of any category'? Additionally, could you let me know on which page of your website the issue is visible?
The issue occurred first when we activated the plugin, then we changed it again to fix it while WPML was activated fixing the menu and category. We created a staging environment to troubleshoot, and noticed it now occurs when we deactivate the plugin. The issue is visible on the staging environment. hidden link
I have wpml turned off in order for it to be visible.
When you activate the WPML plugin, will you get what is expected? Could you please explain what is expected when using WPML so I can better assist you? If I understand correctly, we are not talking about menu translations.
In our menu structure there is a blog archive called 'nieuws' (picture 1) this blog archive was a standard archive that was renamed. When we activated the plugin the archive was no longer shown (picture 2). In the back (picture 5) we noticed that 'Not part of a category / maakt geen deel uit van een categorie' was added. It seemed like 'nieuws' was replaced by the category 'not a part of a category' the moment we activated the plugin.
We did change this manually again when the plugin was activated, but now when we deactivate the plugin the same sort of thing happens.
We are wondering how this can happen and how we can keep it from happening in the future, if there is something we can do about it. This happened when we activated WPML and we don't want menu to break when we, in the future, decide to add another language.
Have you tried deactivating non-WPML related plugins, such as Admin Menu Editor, to ensure that the issue is not caused by third-party plugins?
I need to request temporary access (wp-admin and FTP) to your site – preferably to a test site where the problem has been replicated if possible – in order to be of better help. You will find the needed fields for this below the comment area when you log in to leave your next reply. The information you will enter is private which means only you and I can see and have access to it.
Thank you for the details. I think I have an idea about this. The default WordPress category term is Uncategorized (which has term ID 1), which somehow appeared to be in the Dutch language (Geen onderdeel van een categorie) under the English version of the site. Then, it was translated into Nieuws in Dutch. Actually, I do not see the issue here. If WPML is deactivated, it displays this category term with ID 1 because it is part of your menu. When activated, WPML displays the translated category term Nieuws (with ID 737) in the Dutch version of the site. I suggest activating WPML, and rename default Uncategorized (Geen onderdeel van een categorie) to News.
